Neff: Unequal distribution of ACC revenue a ‘need’

Feb 25, 2023, 8:41 PM

As the Big Ten and Southeastern conferences deepen their pockets by adding schools with brand value, unequal distribution of ACC revenues has been floated as a way to keep bigger brand-name schools such as Clemson satisfied with their financial position in the conference.

When asked if unequal distribution was a “want” or a “need,” Clemson athletic director Graham Neff chose the stronger of the two words.

“In all candor, I put it as a need,” Neff said in an interview with The Post and Courier. “We certainly recognize the investment that we’ve continued to make as an institution, in our community, in athletics, namely in football, which certainly drives a lot of value that is important from a television and revenue-generation standpoint.

“Is it time revenue distribution within conferences, or at least the ACC, is done differently? Yeah, I’ve been very active in those conversations within the league and continue to expect to take a leadership role in our desire for that to be a changed circumstance. Urgently.”

"Urgently" - strong word

I'm thinking more "promise" than "threat"

Yep… some stuff is about to go down if significant changes

are not made. Clemson and FSU can’t carry ACC football like they have and invest like they have just to allow other football programs in other conferences leap frog them on the $$ front. Doing nothing at this point is suicide. Clemson isn’t going to do nothing I can assure you of that. And Neff is letting the ACC know that too.

'Urgent' means

This is probably the strongest language I’ve heard from Clemson so far. How urgent? 1 year? Six months? 5 years?

To me Clemson has been extremely patient with the ACC - at least in public. I don’t think they can continue to be without being left behind.

Clemson has been carrying the ACC far too long without adequate compensation. Yes, FSU is a good brand, but they haven't contributed very much in years until the last season or two. The ACC schools don't invest enough in their football programs, and it shows in how they play and draw TV ratings. I'm sick of the lack of respect from Conference Tobacco Road.

My two cents.

This is very encouraging, in the sense that

Neff and other leadership must be in lockstep on Clemson's position and institutional needs regarding our current alignment. I still feel like the effort is there to create a viable path forward for the ACC and its East Coast collective, but not in its current form on the football side of the equation. Something has to give there, or it's lights out for the ACC as we know it.

Past time for someone to light a fire under the ACC and its current leadership. I mean #### if the Big 12 can lose their 2 largest football brands and add Group of 5 schools and keep the same money that tells you value has gone up. The ACC needs to add or do something (PAC merger) to get ESPN back to the table. I don't care if it is adding WVU and Memphis to expand the footprint just do something.

I really believe that expansion to a 12 team playoff will prove to be our saving grace and it couldn't be more timely. It is extremely likely and #### near guaranteed that Clemson will be in the mix. Will just drive the " ROY BUS " in there and win our way into the championship game. I have no doubts we will prove to be at least worthy of the semi's and perhaps more.

Once that occurs annually Clemson will earn their just desserts and all else will fall into place. Just you watch. It's gonna happen

My kneejerk reaction to that.

12 team playoff.

4 SEC teams.
3 B1G teams.

1 ACC team.

How is that going to do anything but make the money difference even bigger?

There is only one champion regardless of the total contesteants. That champion will earn more than the other " contestants " that don't win. That champion will also earn more. The notoriety alone immediately gaps the other teams

Pretty sure the conferences have set up....

Feb 26, 2023, 3:10 PM

... the payout so that the participating team gets all its expenses paid and the remainder is distributed equally throughout the conference.

Do you value the championship more or the payout ?

Anybody think that Neff and Alford (FSU AD)....

Anybody?
