Brian Kelly hire

LSU leadership sees this guy as a top talent in the business? I am gonna have to disagree. He got placed in the national championship game against Bama and his team got destroyed. His next big chance was a playoff game against Clemson , beaten senseless 30-3 . Then a couple years later he upsets Clemson at home and all he needs to do is beat us again to make another playoff...wallopped once again. Big big games ,lopsided losses. It isn't as if Notre Dame isn't a place you can't recruit . It's not like he didn't have great players or the benefit of playing a chosen schedule more or less as an independent. So it's him, right? I bet he's run out of Baton Rouge in 5 years.

Agree, if he's not in a CFP title game within 3 yrs, he's gone... Unless there's compelling evidence his 4th yr would be better. Imho, he knew his days were limited at ND with another beatdown in a big game. The alum was not happy with his Cincy loss.

The historical ND schedule not has been good (USC, Stanford, etc). ND has had some good years but as you said they have been exposed in big games. They have won but their schedule has been weaker than in the past. So, weaker competition but no title.
Teams like USC are going to be good again. No conference affiliation, high academic standards, bureaucratic red tape that isn’t present elsewhere, etc, etc, etc. Reports are he was making $5M at ND and he gets $9.5M at LSU. ND has no allegiance to their coach, just look at the track record before Kelly. Not a Kelly fan but good for him; $100M and a lot of pain for ND. I ain’t mad at him.

No, it’s the talent at ND, ND requires the same academic standards as Vanderbilt abs Stanford to get in for athletes. It’s honestly remarkable what he did at ND. He finally decided he wanted to come into a game vs Us or Bama with equal talent or better. Look at his resume, he left Cincinnati a much better program than it was when he got there and the same for ND. The dude looked at LSU and said, Les Miles and Ed Orgeron won nattys there and probably laughed and said, wait til you see what I can do with talent like that.

ND has a much bigger pool to choose from than those two, because of WWII and all that handed history, ect...that makes them think they are still special long past the days of cable sports TV. The money that private schools have to offer beyond a state school is another advantage that they will not mention. Forget them and their Tony Rice shh shhhs. Oh wait, it is much tougher since 2000, jive. The fact is they no longer are the only team that young players see every week and past Lou cheating it shows.

However, ND thinks they just got an out to trim the fat. Which I believe they are right. The DC is the better coach and more than likely face of the organization.

in his defense, he is a bit limited as to who he can recruit at ND, he will not have that problem at LSU, their admin will take anyone. It would be his best chance to win a title, ND is a little hamstrung o their recruiting with their academic and character requirements. And since Holtz left, he is the only coach to sustain any success there.
anyway, I imagine that is how he sees it, I think a good coaching staff could win one at ND though..Swinney or Saban would have no problem turning them into a powerhouse.

I think Kelly will be gone after 5 years as well. However, it will be after one or more CFP appearances… championships or not. The only thing missing from his college resume is the CFP championship. He will give it a shot there. If he wins one in year two (unlikely but big O did it I think), then he is off to the NFL. Over time he became a bit more of a players coach at ND, but no players went to ND because of Kelly (or few did). Kelly just wants to coach and get to the NFL.
I think Freeman is a great hire for ND. It will be trial by fire (I’m thinking about the non-football part) but the guy is more charismatic and not socially awkward like Kelly. But yes, as many have said the life of a DC vs the coach at high profile university is different.
I’m not an ND homer but I unfortunately live 30 minutes from campus and since I’m 700 miles from Clemson - well, if you can’t be with the one you love - love (or at least tolerate) the one you are with.
I think both schools did great. Also pretty amazing that hardly any assistants are going with Kelly with almost all appearing to choose to remain on staff.
