NC State LB wins Butkus Award

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State linebacker and ACC Defensive Player of the Year Payton Wilson won the 2023 Butkus Award, which recognizes the top defensive linebacker in college football.
Also a First-Team All-ACC selection, Wilson led the league and ranked fifth in the FBS in tackles with 138 and tackles per game at 11.5 per contest. He was also the league leader in tackles-for-loss with 17.5, the sixth-most in all of FBS. He also notched six sacks, 10 pass breakups, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and three interceptions, returning one for a score.
The Hillsborough, North Carolina, led the Wolfpack in tackles in 10 games this season and was a five-time ACC Linebacker of the Week. He was named the Butkus Linebacker of the Month for September and was also a finalist for the Bednarik Award and the Nagurski Award.
Wilson is the first NC State player ever to win the Butkus Award and the first ACC player since Isaiah Simmons of Clemson in 2019.

I thought the same thing so I looked up the stats. Wilson's stats were a little better. ACC had some great LB play this year. Trotter was awesome and this year put a lot of money in his pocket in terms of draft stock. Wilson and Deloach were also great and made big plays against us that are a big reason we lost to FSU and State. The kid at UNC made all conference as well, but I really did not see much of him this year.

Stats are objective, so the Playoff Committee needs to look at this to determine who is really best.
