Bennie Cunningham
Perry Tutle
Mike Williams
Nuke Hopkins
Hunter Renfrow

GO TIGERS BEAT EM ALL!

For sheer clutchness, mine would be:

Oct 3, 2022, 8:30 PM

1) Mikey Williams (MR. Clutch. If I had to have a Clemson receiver catch one ball to save my life, he would be the guy I would pick.)
2) Nuk Hopkins (Great in college, but only a shadow of what he turned out to be in the NFL)
3) Hunter Renfrow (Clutch slot receivers are just as valuable as speedy wideouts)
4) Sammy Watkins (Probably the only wideout we ever had that the opposition HAD to gameplan against.)
5) Perry Tuttle (WAY under utilized due to our offense at the time, but clutch as it gets.)

Gotta put Terry Smith in there. When he came through

He was like Nuk , the only threat we had.

My thoughts exactly! Jerry Butler and Dwight Clark. What a combo.

Dwight Clark was almost a non-factor at Clemson. He caught 33 passes for 0 TDs in 3 years at Clemson, and ranks 67th all-time in receiving yards.

Did your count of D.Clark's 3 years of playing include his Sr. year of 1978?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep - he had 11 catches as a senior in 78.

Oct 4, 2022, 10:44 AM

Came to Clemson as a QB, got moved to DB, really only played WR (flanker) full time for 3 yrs.

Re: Funny how time distorts memories ...

Oct 3, 2022, 9:37 PM [ in reply to Funny how time distorts memories ... ]

Clark had 3 TDs including a 60+ yarder against the game with Maryland in 1977 that clinched our 1st ACC Championship since 1967, plus a cruicial catch in the final drive to come back and beat UofSC, resulting in our 1st bowl game since 1959.

Not Top 5 at Clemson but not insignificant and a great career in the NFL.

I was there at Maryland... Spoke with him about that game

one day at The Masters when we both had our sons with us...

He came over to where we sitting because my son was wearing my old '49ers 'varsity' jacket. Nice guy.

Definitely had a tremendous NFL career, but as far as

careers go, it was not top 5, 10, 20, 30, or 40 at Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Top 4

Oct 3, 2022, 9:37 PM

Jerry Butler
Sammy Watkins
Nuke Hopkins
Mike Williams

If you don't have JB on the list then you've never seen him in person. Ran a 4.29 and had roughly a 40 inch vertical. Sure handed. We ran an option attack back then so he didn't get the touches. Had a lot of receptions and TD's for the Bills but battled injuries. Would have been off the charts in a spread offense in the current era.

Re: Top 4

Oct 3, 2022, 9:56 PM

On September 23, 1979, Butler had 255 receiving yards and 4 touchdown catches (5 yds, 75 yds, 74 yds, 9 yds) in the Bills 46-31 win over the New York Jets in Week 4.[1]

Butler coached wide receivers in 1999 and 2000 for Cleveland, then served as Director of Player Development for the Cleveland Browns until his contract ended in 2011.[2] Butler was the Buffalo Bills- NFL “Man of Year” in 1981 and 1982, honored in 1983 by the Buffalo and Erie County YMCA with the Jackie Robinson Award, and Buffalo Bills Ed Block Courage Award recipient in 1985.[3][4]

What did Sammy Watkins and Jerry Butler have in common ? ( besides the obvious)

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Both drafted by the Bills

Oct 3, 2022, 9:19 PM

maybe both were first WRs picked that year?

Re: name your top 5 wide recievers in tigers lore

1. Nuk Hopkins - "the catch vs. LS-who helped propel the Tigers to the next level"!
2. Hunter Renfrow - "the catch that beat the vaunted Crimson Tired who runs roughshod over SEC teams"!
3. Mike Williams - Dominant! Carrying lamecock defenders into the endzone like little kids.
4. Sammy Watkins - The image of him dominating is linked to some of the WR's we got later on!
5. Perry Tuttle - because as a kid watching the 81 team; he and Homer Jordan were names I knew!

Rod Gardner = The Catch II. Down by 1 point to scar with 19 seconds left he catches a bomb to put Clemson in position to kick a FG with 7 seconds left to beat the shamecocks!

Re: name your top 5 wide recievers / not counting TEs

Oct 3, 2022, 9:52 PM

#1 - Jerry Butler. Fantastic WR accomplishments during our era of run first / run (almost) always.

#2 - Sammy Watkins. His arrival & video-game FR. 2011 season brought Clemson back into the WR limelight)

#3 - Mike Williams. He was Clemson's version of MegaTron ... but better because he won a Natty.

#4 - Perry Tuttle. Huge factor on offense for 1981 Natty, heir to J.Butler towards creation of WRU.

#5 - DeAndre Hopkins. Not much hype coming in, but whew his LSU bowl game and 18 TDs in 2012? Unreal.

(List excludes TEs ... our TEs deserve their own list.)

In my lifetime, it’s Sammy Watkins. (I’m 28)
Some really great WRs have donned the paw since I was born but Sammy has to be #1, probably best Clemson WR ever. That dude came in as a true freshman and was a legit 1st round pick. He was an alien

which rules out anyone before 1990.

Watkins
Williams
Hopkins
Hamilton
Gardner

I wouldn't argue with putting Renfrow on there in place of Hamilton or Gardner just due to the clutch catches he made.
