My view of the portal through the lens of TNet

There is a segment here very anxious for us to drop 7 figures on an impact guy. There may eventually be a guy who is a major addition who isn't seeking a bundle, but let's face the truth, most are. Which means we are not likely to see it happen.
To say we aren't looking for guys who have several years left to develop and could possibly drop a lesser amount of $ on is not true. The OL we targeted all fit that profile. All were good prospects. All chose elsewhere. Why? Does anyone see that when you return 7,500 snaps played on the OL (have we ever returned that?) it's a stumbling block to that? So the scholarship goes to Young.
Carter returns, so no need for an LB with 5 talented guys returning, though some inexperience as Trotter and Carter played so many snaps. But of those 5, 1 is a 5 star impact freshman, 3 are/were highly rated 4 stars, and Woodaz has proven he's a possible star. So we add a solid 4 star and 2 developmental 3 stars to some other developmental guys from last year. Personally, I see no issue with that.
DE? Dabo dropped Woods to DE as a possibility yesterday. A Wilkins type scenario. I think Story is a possibility as well. Our depth at DT is incredible and allows for this. We'll see, but that's the long term planning we know nothing about as far as roster management. Unless he improves a ton, I don't think we see a guy like Denhoff starting, no matter what the depth chart says now.
I'll take the 2 WR we got over anyone in the portal.
And, I do think there is some logic in Dabo's statements regarding some of the late additions. When schools are taking 10-15-20 transfers, high school guys are getting left behind for power 5 spots. I also believe HS coaches are noticing this. Whether any of the 3 this year amount to anything is to be seen, but I don't think that take by Dabo is wrong. The portal is hurting opportunity for guys like this. In just the last 2 years we've seen late takes like Williams, Barnes and Brown have major impacts. Our history is littered with guys like this, and honestly, it's part of what has made us special. Can we all admit that? We beat Bama twice with more 3 stars than 4 and 5 stars on our roster. So long as we sign the impact 4 and 5 stars, we'll be fine. It's when we miss on those guys that we struggle. If Ladson, or Ngata, or DJ, or any number of other guys had been hits, we aren't having this conversation.

Totally agree, fans don’t like this take because it doesn’t create headlines or buzz but is a solid “business model” long term- which is what Dabo is looking at. Not to mention, we don’t have to re-stock every year because we don’t lose the “mercenary” 18 players each year. We only handed out less than 80 offers this year- meanwhile UofSC offers anything that has a pulse, we offer young men that fit our model.

Striperfan, as I have said before there is something special about you. You could be Dabo with those remarks and I agree 100%. Dabo is willing to use the portal as he should when the right situation comes along. Meanwhile, I had rather ride with these guys that chose Clemson because they wanted to be here. Cade, for one such example wanted to come to Clemson because of what Clemson represents. He did not have to be paid to come play his guts out for you fans. Let’s ride with Dabo and these kind of guys rather than the mercenaries many others are using to win a trophy.

My view of the portal.

I see FSU and Clemson who are using the portal in two completely different ways. I see Colorado as using it a third different way. I see new coaches coming in (aTm, Michigan State, Oregon State, et. al.) using it a 4th different way.
And, I see fans of each of those schools complaining about how they are using the portal. Some complain they aren't using it enough. Others too much. Some complain that they aren't paying guys enough in NIL deals. Others complain they are paying too much. My only conclusion is that message boards everywhere tend to generate more negative comments than positive ones.
Example: Yesterday it became pretty certain that FSU's top recruit (K J Bolden) was going to flip to UGA. 5* DB. The rest of the day was filled with, "Why can't Norvell close on recruits? Why are we losing our recruits on signing day? Norvell has to fire some coaches and hire recruiters. UGA outbid us. Our collective stinks. We're doomed. Etc. etc."
Well, truth is FSU signed the best DB class it has ever had. Three 4* DBs did sign. Overall, the class finished ranked 6th, easily the best ever under Norvell. But, posters focus on the negavite.
Question: Should Dabo go after a QB in the portal? Some say yes, others no. Let me rephrase that question. What if Klubnick had entered the portal? Do you think Dabo would not be out there looking for a guy who can come in and start immediately? (Cam Ward, Will Howard, or any of those other guys who have already committed elsewhere like Dillon Gabriel.)
Look at all the aTm guys who are leaving. Elko has no choice but to use the portal. New coaches coming in virtually have to use the portal either to replace talent that is leaving or to upgrade talent because what is currently on the roster is not very good.
The NCAA screwed things up royally with unfettered free agency. The courts complicated it with saying there is no salary cap on paying players. Coaches are left with trying to figure it out.
But, every school is in a different situation. There is no "one size fits all" solution.

I don’t see a great difference in how Colorado and FSU are using the portal. Colorado just had a much bigger rebuilding job. Both clearly are using NIL to entice (buy) top players!
Dabo has made it clear he will not use the NIL to recruit. Dabo has a “retention only” policy with NIL use! I think we ALL know FSU and Colorado are using NIL to recruit the portal and HS recruits both. That was not the intent of NIL. It is a misuse. Unenforced misuse but still it is morally wrong. Dabo won’t do it. This is such a fundamental difference in the Clemson program that so many cannot process, including you Brett when you say Dabo would’ve replace Klubnik with a top portal QB. A top portal QB costs over $1 million and that ain’t happening with Dabo. At the end of the day Dabo making players earn it should pay major retention dividends on the average basis. But it won’t stop the poaching of top players (Mukuba) by other programs. That will go on.

Dabo knows this and be through rules or just the money drying up he is not willing to just be another fish in that slime filled pond and our microwave mentality fans need to find some patience because the unique nature of HOW Clemson operates is what made the last 10 years possible - Clemson is not in a position to "do what everyone else is doing" and maintain what makes it stand out. The whole CFB world is constantly changing now and what seems like a major shift is nothing more than a pendulum swing - it all has to settle at something sustainable and the current landscape IS NOT that - so relax and be happy Dabo is captain of this ship and not some attention seeking follower trying to play a game with no rules.

Yes, Clemson has accomplished great things in the last 10 years. Look at the growth in every area. Did you ever think billions of dollars in construction and growth in the Clemson area would be taking place as it is. It is beyond what I ever thought could occur. Dabo is one of the smartest guys out there but he tempers it with Christian principles. He will be successful but in the right way. Yes, we all are a little disappointed this year but support the Captain of the ship and he will get you to your destination safely without running the boat upon the shore like Texas A&M Jimbo and many others to come. I’m on board for the long term even though I know there is going to be some bumps along the way. Dabo, thanks for all you have done for us and for all you do.

If top QBs are 1.2 million it's hard to believe a receiver is 7 figures.
I would like to know the numbers like what did the receiver that went to UNC get?
If it's 6 figures then there is a discussion for bringing a guy in for a year or two or at least say we were interested in a guy but didn't have the budget for his asking price.

I view the portal the way Bama and GA views it. Build through recruiting and development but when you miss and need to patch a whole be willing to pay the money to bring in an immediate starter. I think we should have went hard after a couple OL targets in the portal. Also had we not had this drop off on the field these past three seasons no one would be saying a thing. We’d be like shoot we are doing just fine without the portal. Unfortunately we were not a good team this year and some portal players last year would have helped. Especially at WR and OL.
Now we can all sit here and predict how 2024 will go but we all don’t know and just have to trust Dabo and the coaches. All we know is 8-4 don’t cut it.

7500 career snaps on our current OL is not conducive to bringing in an OL guy without some guarantee of PT, and Dabo ain't doing that

So do the 7500 snaps reflect now elite players?
3

I’ve worked with “experienced” people over the years. Some had 20 years of experience and they were constantly improving their performance. They were elite employees.
There was another group that has 20 years of the same 1-year experience and never raised their game.
Which example do our 7500 OL snaps reflect?
Adding alike will definitely help grow our OL up fast.. I’m looking for some significant visible improvement this year… That’s an Excellent start.
But I think going after a portal guy for him to play 3 years is the wrong approach. We should go after an elite guy that will give us elite performance for 1 year while the others that play with him follow his work ethic and habits as they rise to his level.
If we expect a portal guy to stay 3 years, I think we’re fooling ourselves.
A co-worker of mine is a UGA fan and he showed me the size of the OL guys they just signed… heights of 6-8, 6-8, 6-8, 6-6, 6-6 and each one weighs over 300 pounds.
No matter how many snaps they have a player can’t gain height.
We’re on the right path with the OL, now we just need our elite WR and QB to rise to the occasion.

where tons of experience already exists to compete for PT. Portal guys are looking to play immediately, a there is certainly no guarantee of that here, especially with Tate and Parks getting healthy

Majority of lifers already know this but the 2015ers let our run convince them that we are Bama. We were never Bama and never are going to be. Dabo has his ways of doing things that’s brought tremendous success and like you said if we didn’t have those misses this isn’t even a conversation.

It appears that you have put considerable thought into this, and from the way that it read to me you've came pretty close to hitting the nail square on the head. But, it won't matter how close you've come to the actual way that college sports made the wrong turn with the NIL and transfer portal to close together without placing rules that could govern the NIL before adding the transfer portal that don't have the correct rules to govern it either. Now with two major factors called the NIL, and transfer portal, every school is determining their own rules that fits their own personal situation.
I don't know if there is a way to fix this circle jerk that the federal courts help to put college FB in with their ruling on the NIL. Then the NCAA gets pisssed over the NIL ruling and decides to make matters worse, they come up with a bomb called the transfer portal that allows student athletes to jump in and out of as many different schools as they wish to go that's offering the most Cash, and I believe this was intentional by the NCAA just to prove THEIR point of paying players was bad for college sports bc it was done without them being able to get their hands all over the huge payout that the athletes are enjoying without the NCAA getting a share, and they don't want to try and fix it until the entire system breaks apart, and it's headed down that path really quick....

and any law passed limiting it goes straight to SCOTUS. I tend to agree with you that this is the new norm. I think it could mean some years like this past year down the road, whether it be injuries or lack of performance from guys who were recruited to be the studs. But, if we hit on our high end recruits, we'll still be in the running for a championship.
We've shown consistently we can develop 3 stars, but we need the 5 stars and high end 4 stars to play that way. Last 3 years, mostly on offense, we haven't seen that.

All anyone has to do is listen to Dabo's post signing day presser, he lays it all out and why they are doing what they are doing... it all makes perfect sense despite the army of experts with a keyboard.
