My thoughts on DJ....

Dec 4, 2022, 10:13 AM

1. DJ has handled this situation in the most mature way possible. He never threw anybody under the bus, and he always took the blame in stride. It was noted that he was a great team leader, and one of the hardest working players on the team. DJ will be successful in anything he does in life (that isn't football). I wish him nothing but the best.

2. It's obvious that Cade brings a spark to this offense that is not possible w/ DJ. It's been obvious all along that the problem wasn't the WRs or the OC. Sure the WR and OC could improve, but the main problem was DJ. His pocket presence was awful, his decision making was awful and slow, and his accuracy was inconsistent.

3. Dabo handled this about as poorly as he could have. Cade should have won the job after he brought us back against Syracuse by double digits. We would have likely won the SCAR game, and be in the playoff. Dabo pissed a lot of Clemson fans off this year. Good thing is that he has earned the right to make mistakes of this magnitude. Dabo's seat is about as cold as any in the country, as it should be.

Agree 100%. If ck plays against sc in the second half we win.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

1: what else could he do and who else could he possibly blame?
2: Yes!
3: Yes! Unfortunately respect is hard to earn and easy to lose. I don’t even see Dabo trying to earn that back from the fans and it’s shocking. Clemson is an easy place to be loved and Danny Ford will tell you about how quickly they will run your ### out if you get cocky!

There were plenty of times that WRs made mistakes. Just listen to this interview. This is typical DJ. Incredibly rare for a kid his age to deal with a toxic situation such as this as well as he did.

I was never thrilled with his play but he is a wonderful leader. Great leader.

It was only a toxic situation because of himself. You act like Clemson had issues with receivers, the same receivers that caught all of Cades balls last night and during Syracuse. Stop excusing the inexcusable

It was toxic because it was obvious he wasn't good enough and our coaches kept trotting him out there. He was getting booed, and the whole time he was positive, put his head down, and went to work.

I would prob get kicked out the stadium if I had actual Clemson fans booing DJ, regardless of how bad he plays like you said it’s on the coaches to keep throwing him out there expecting it to go any diff. Rant about the coaches and playcalling or whatever else but if you sit there and boo your own players that’s POS status in my book … that’s one thing I love about being a Braves fan and hate about watching a Philly or Mets game , they literally booed scherzer I believe it was in the playoffs .. that’s pathetic

Inlet,

Exactly. I would also point out that the players are aware of the mistakes made - and what it has cost them. How does Dabo earn their trust and respect back - especially when he refuses to accept responsibility for his mistakes.

Good post.

Not playing Klubnik in the SC game is a real head scratcher for sure and that loss is squarely on the coaches’ shoulders. On the other hand it’s easy to see why the coaches gave DJ every opportunity (albeit too much of an opportunity IMHO) to be the guy. Great kid. Great leader. Hard worker. Had and still had the respect of his teammates and had formed that bond for 3 years. As for those who say Klubnik should have started after the Cuse game I can see why he didn’t. Winning the Cuse game wasn’t so much about what Cade did but what he didn’t do (turn the ball over). He didn’t light it up against the orange either. The ground game and the defense won that game. All speculation aside we can all turn the page now. Dabo has more than earned the right to be human and mess up and while circumstances may not allow him to publicly admit it you can bet he knows that’s exactly what he did by not playing Klubnik against SC.

1. Yes

2. Yes

3. Eh debatable -- should CK2 have taken over after Cuse? IMO that'd be banking that what we saw last night would be the norm and no one could necessarily guarantee that would be the case.

DJ had played okay up to that point and CK2 (outside of the 2 pt conversion) did not look good throwing the ball and even almost threw a pick 6 that a Cuse defender dropped. However, I do think at ND CK2 should've been allowed to start the 2nd half and finish the game and maybe things work out for us better.

That said, all water under the bridge now and can't rewrite how it all played out. Excited to see CK2 and the crew one more time in the Orange Bowl -- hopefully it goes like tonight to get us hyped heading into next year

Great post mountaineers. Agree on all this. Hope Dabo learned from whatever happened this year with the QBs. Wish DJ well. No matter what happens with football, hope he’s proud of his diploma from Clemson.

Mostly agree

But #2…. ??

Its still not obvious that its not the WRs or OC.

First, the OC. He is responsible for offensive personnel evaluations and game plans. If he presents a poor offensive product because of those choices, it is still his fault. He has to identify the squeaky wheel and get feedback to the squeaky wheel’s position coaches.

Secondly, he’s the QB coach. Its his job to help the players progress in a way, positionally, that helps make the offense better.

Lastly, the WRs coach. They were remarkably better with Cade. But the 100-yd player just had his second touch of the season. Where has he been? Outside of Antonio, why is our 9th option the second-best WR? But the “every down effort” (i.e. blocking) is still below our standard. And, yes, drops are up this year. Just seems like a big dip in the craftsmanship of this position across the board.
