Tips for a long commute?
Oct 26, 2017, 5:42 PM
|
|
I'm going from a 12 minute ride to work to 45-50 minutes. It's all open road with no traffic and only 3 red lights.
Looking for recommendations for a gas saver. Also curious if anyone has any tips for how to make that time productive. Audio books and phone calls is all I can think of.

With soft hands.
Srs although I get mocked every time I mention it:
My Nissan Rogue gets 34+ on the hwy, has room to haul stuff when I need too, and is cheaper than the comparable Toyo and Honda.
I have the library's free audio book app on my phone and get through about a book a week

Dodging the oncoming traffic can be quite fun. Make pretend your in the United Britain and call all the people in other car's wankers.

Why buy a "gas saver"?
Oct 27, 2017, 7:51 AM
|
|
Did you do the math? Does it save you money when you add initial investment + insurance + taxes + fuel $ savings (negative number) + wear and tear on primary vehicle (negative number)?
If your primary vehicle gets 20+ mpg on that commute, it may not be saving you any money.

1990 Oldsmobile Delta 88 - 315K miles 20mpg cost - free $ to get it roadworthy - maybe $300 Annual taxes - $12 Annual insurance - $300
Pride from getting Pawpaw's old car back on the road and commuting with it daily - priceless

Speaking of my kiddos, they call it the "fancy car". They think it's the coolest thing on the road... mostly because they only ever ride in trucks, vans, SUV's etc. and never really get to ride in a "normal car". Plus it used to have a tiger tail hanging from the antenna (until the carwash ripped it off).
Nobody trying to buy weed, but I had a hobo at the gas station tell me that his grandpa used to have one just like it, and also an old guy at the liquor told me how cool he thought it was last week.

I get around 15 mpg in my truck (Ram with a 5.7L V8) and don't want to put that many miles on it. I also like the convenience of having a third vehicle in case one of the others is out of commission.
The insurance is maybe $250 per year on a (cheap) 3rd vehicle because the insurance company knows you can only drive one car at a time.
