that someone should have to put forth a little bit of effort to vote - to prove that you are really concerned.
The general public considers themselves activists if they "like" a post on Facebook denouncing Obamacare (for example). I cringe at the thought of a ballot with a "Like" button beside each candidate.

take off work or were traveling or whatever? Geez, vote day for me is always hectic and rushed. Lots of people have to take off work unpaid to stand in line and vote.
Why does it have to be a PITA? I mean they try to make it easy when you are there, so why not just make it easy?

Pretty simple actually. Fill out the application, mail it in, when approved your ballot is mailed to you and you fill it out and mail it back.

Whether I am home or not on voting day. You have several weeks prior to voting day where you can drive down to the county elections office and vote when it is convenient for you. No paperwork to fill out. No PITA.

why does it have to be a PITA?
I mean unless you just don't want people who can't drive or re-arrange their schedules to vote. Otherwise why shouldn't everyone get a vote?
Last time I looked into it (for a primary), you had to request the ballot in writing, wait for it, fill it out and mail it in all before 30 days prior to the vote. And they warn you that your vote will be ignored unless a recount is needed.

The stuff you need to do to be prepared to vote and then to actually go vote is a good education in citizenship. People are already so individualistic that they pay almost no attention to politics except when somebody does something stupid or when an entertainer lampoons a politician. Voting online just like you'd fill out a buzzfeed quiz isn't going to improve that situation.

I think it might help with the apathetic voting problem

we just had the lowest voter turnout in more than 70 years and I think that's a huge problem for a democracy (if anything, Congress has gotten worse). Not to mention, the money/influence problem that Obama is attaching to the issue. I don't expect anything to come from the idea though. I think there is more of a push to get money out of politics and we see how little progress has been made in that area. But it's an interesting idea.
Democrats would love it because the one issue that tends to determine if they win/lose in an election is voter turnout. Much of their base is apathetic to politics/voting.
Republicans will oppose because they benefit from lower voter turnout (Look at the last election) so this is a threat to their party. Much of their base are older/emotional voters.
Obama won't have time to push for this, but as Republicans continue to make it harder and harder to vote I wonder if Democrats (like in Oregon) don't start trying to push for mandatory voting. Right now though, I don't see anything coming from this anytime soon.

depends on why they feel apathetic
Mar 19, 2015, 3:47 PM

is it they don't care, or they don't think their vote matters or would make a difference? Making everyone vote would make every vote matter (gerrymandering would probably become even more important)
Shortening Early Voting, Election Day registration, 3rd party registration, voter Id, purging voter rolls all lowers voter turnout which, not surprisingly, is beneficial for republican candidates.
Funny thing is you see a reaction like in Oregon and in comments like Obama's when you see things like these voter suppression initiatives take place. Same thing is happening with Gay marriage and republican governments taking a more active legislative approach (from a state perspective at least).
