Most overplayed song on the radio that you grew to hate?

Oct 19, 2022, 9:34 AM

I have a clear winner in my mind. This song made me change stations after awhile whenever it came on, which seemed to be about once an hour. What's yours?

three that stand out that I absolutely loathe to this day are:

Anita Ward - Ring My Bell

Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive

Alicia Bridges - I Love the Night Life

Excellent choices.

I would add "I Whip My Hair" which is literally the only words in the song, and some song about shoes and guilty feet having no pleasure. Dumbest song I ever heard.

Hmmm, do I detect a Disdain for Disco in these selections?

If I hear Kate Bush, Running up that Hill anymore I may need to be restrained.

Hated that operatic voice in the 80’s, and the song’s revival and newfound following hasn’t made it better.

Born in the USA may be the most mis-understood song of all time. Because it gets played at events like it is some patriotic rallying cry is probably why.

The song is about someone's terrible experience in Vietnam and how poorly Vietnam Vets were treated when they came back. Many of the young men had no idea why they were even there.

Let me take this time again to say Welcome Home to all the Vietnam Vets who were treated with disrespect after coming home. I am happy that as a society we better understand the fact that politicians decide where and when we fight- American Soldiers just answer the call.

No one who grew up in the era AFTER there were Beatles

Oct 20, 2022, 9:03 AM [ in reply to Never got the whole admiration of Springsteen, the Beatles, or The Rolling Stones??*** ]

can ever truly appreciate the impact they had. Because the world the later people grew up in was already permanently changed by the impact The Beatles had on music.

I issue a challenge that no one will accept. Listen to ONLY music from 1960-1963 for one whole year. Immerse yourself in the Do-Wop, the "Lounge Lizard" crooners, and the early country music. Do that for a whole year, without listening to anything up to or past The Beatles first appearance on the American Charts.

I believe you will begin to have an inkling of what a seismic shift in music happened when "The British Invasion", that was spearheaded by The Beatles, first hit the American Airwaves. It still won't be the same, because you have already heard modern music, but it will be the best you could do.

The irony of “Born In The USA” is that if you listen to or read the lyrics, it is quite an anti-American song, but expected from the likes of him. It’s funny how we all just ate that up in the mid-1980s (granted, I was a gullible little boy, but I was fooled with the rest) that it was somehow “American Patriotism.”

P.S. No offense to anyone present, but I really dislike “The Boss.”

I don't think I would've admitted that!***

Well, at Christmas some people would say it is All I Want for Christmas is You. But that remains my fav rock and roll Christmas tune.

"I'm a survivor" by Destiny's Child. Ugh... They used to play 93.7 in the kitchen at outback steakhouse, where i worked, round about the turn o' the century and I swear this song was played 3 times every hour on that dumb top 40 station. Came to hate that song...

Don’t know where these people that post disco songs are listening. I haven’t heard a disco song on the radio in 40 years.

I like Elton John especially his earlier work. That's all my aunt would play in the car. I can see her pushing that 8 track cartridge in the dash player now.

It was hard not to catch a Mariah Carey song when radio surfing in the 90's. Also Toni Braxton songs too.

Seven Bridges Road by the Eagles. Couldn't stand it, and especially hated the way it started.

Now....many years later, absolutely LOVE that song and appreciate the harmony. I guess that's what growing up does to you.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didn't even think it was a full song for the longest time.

Oct 20, 2022, 9:23 AM

It was more like a brief concert opening harmony introduction.

Let's hope you don't include Faces when Rod Steward was the lead singer. That'd be blasphemy.

James Taylor and Boz Skaggs certainly had some good songs!

Of course, I wouldn't want to listen to James Taylor all day long...a little to mellow for me! Now, Allman Brothers and Marshall Tucker...never get tired of them!
