Modern Day Clemson MBB Coaches

Tates Locke Overall 62-70, ACC 20-42 Bill Foster Overall 156-106 ACC 44-74 Cliff Ellis Overall 177-128 ACC 59-100 Rick Barnes Overall 74-48 ACC 30-40 Larry Shyatt Overall 70-84 ACC 21-62 Oliver Purnell Overall 138-88 ACC 54-69 Brad Brownell Overall 201-150 ACC 100-109
I posted this not to confirm or refute anything that has been said recently about Brad Brownell, only to give a reference to previous MBB Coaches. Take it for what it is. I know there are several other things that need to be considered such as Tournament appearances, Tournament wins, other accomplishments, etc.
I will mention one for BB that no other Clemson coach accomplished. Win at UNC! Not endorsing BB, but it was a big accomplishment.

Great information and verification of how hard it is to win in the ACC. You can pretty disregard to total wins because that is like football and includes a bunch of cupcakes.

MBB coaches best recruiting during their tenure.
1984-1994 Cliff Ellis put the following players in the NBA
Horace Grant Elden Campbell Dale Davis Chris Whitney Sharone Wright (Harvey Grant played for Clemson then transferred before going to NBA)
Larry Shyatt 1998-2003
Greg Buckner Harold Jaminson Will Solomon
Brad Brownell 2010-Present
KJ Daniels Jarron Blossongame Donte Graham
Cliff Ellis had 5 or six NBA players in 10 years Larry Shyatt had 3 NBA players in 6 years Brad Brownell has 3 NBA players in 12 years
Just some other facts to supplement the above post.

Dang, that is somewhat of a buzzkill. We really have sucked forever. Bill Foster was the coach when I was there and I thought we had a pretty decent team, then when Cliff Ellis came, boy were we excited!

we are who we are in basketball......

I'd love to know the typical Clemson fan's "baseline" basketball expectations??........b/c some on here seem to have extremely unrealistic expectations.
and this also is not advocating for or against Brad Brownell's employment.

NCAAT 4 out of 6 years including at least two trips to ACCT semis and one sweet sixteen.

Baseline expectations.
Finish in the top 35 teams every year. Finish in the top 5 ACC 90% of the time. Win at least 1-2 ACC tournament games every year. Win the ACC tournament at least once. (Don’t tell me that’s unrealistic Georgia Tech just did it last year) and play in the dance 75% of times.
Those are not unreasonable or unrealistic for a school like Clemson.

I like the optimism, however why is that NOT unrealistic....

what do we offer in history, support, recruiting, facilities, etc..... to warrant sustaining being in the top 5 of the ACC 9 of 10 years and play in the tourney 8ish out of 10 years?
don't get me wrong, I think we can hit a 2-3 year hot streak at some point and get to the ACC champ game.............and if you get there you always have a shot, but sustaining those expectations is pretty unrealistic considering we've been to the tourney once every 3ish years for the last 42 years. Every coach we've had has a losing ACC record. In the last 13 years we've been to the ACC Champ game and made one sweet sixteen.
I will say this. In order for Clemson to have "better than average" basketball success relative to their history it will need a "gimmick"..........Oliver Purnell had that.

Interesting that half of BB’s wins are ACC wins. I realize that the ACC is down in recent years, but that’s still pretty good. For a Clemson coach, anyway.

All proof (to me, anyway) that the AD needs to raise

their goals and expectations for Clemson men's basketball. There's no good excuse to be that consistently middling. Shell out the $$ to get the BEST guy for the job, not the one that will take it with the perhaps middling salary being offered. There are really two types of coaches, and even players - the ones that want to go to teams that are currently and traditionally great, and ones that want to be part of building that greatness and tradition. We've been blessed in football to have the latter with CDS. We need that in basketball. And you'll either need to get lucky and find the right guy at a good price, or go with a known coach and shell out the dollars to get him and, more importantly, KEEP him!
This isn't all on Brownell. He's doing the best he can, which appears to be middling. This is on the AD and BOT to make excellence in basketball a priority and a goal, and not a wish.
