Millennial Movie Review

Overheard conversation while dining at a restaurant with Mrs. Fordt…
She (pecking on her iphone) Almost done?
He: Yeah. Hey, I saw this funny movie my parents were watching and I think you’d really like it.
She: What’s it called?
He: I only saw part of it so I’ll have to ask them.
She: What’s it about?
He: It’s about some dumb guy. It’s good. He’s a cripple.
She: What? That doesn’t sound like a good movie. Is he in a wheelchair?
He: No. Well, it wasn’t as good as Guardians but it was funny.
She: So what happens in it?
He: Well, this guy is crippled and he becomes a runner.
She: What?
He: He gets cured and then he wants to run, and runs all over the place. He even played football.
She: That sounds dumb. A movie about a dumb guy who runs?
He: Well it’s not just about that. It was all sorts of stuff. And he stopped running after a while.
She: Why did he stop?
He: (pauses) Um, I don’t think it ever said so. But then he has to go into the army and goes to WW2 and his friend dies...a bunch of stuff.
She: Ew. That sounds depressing.
He: Yeah. That part was sad. I think they had to go in the Army way back then. I don’t know.
She: So did he run while he was in the Army? (giggles)
He: No, he was cured by then. He played ping pong in the Army.
She: (slams the table laughing) You are lying to me! Is this movie even real?
He: No, I don’t think any of it really happened. But it was a funny story though.
She: You're making this up.
He: No, it's true. Not the movie I mean, but it was good. It's kinda hard to explain.
She: Does this thing even have a plot? It sounds crazy.
He: Yeah, but it’s all kind of stuff. He has a baby with his girlfriend, and he gets shot, and he has a boat and stuff.
She: Do they get married?
He: What? No. It’s not a chick flick. It’s not really about marriage and stuff. He has a friend.
She: Is he gay?
He: No, they're just friends, but they start a company together and then his friend gets married. It's not really about marriage and all that, though.
She: It sounds pretty bad.
He: I think you’d like it. Wanna watch it sometime?
She: Eh, I dunno. Maybe. Is your phone working? Mine’s out of power.

I think it's a tribute to the director's movie-making skills that even though this guy had no clue whatsoever as to what he had watched, in some dull, lukewarm, fuzzy way he got enjoyment from it, and was grasping for a way to recommend it to others, even if he didn't understand why he enjoyed it.
That's moviemaking craftsmanship.

Sex, drugs, rock-n-roll long hair anti establishment
Funny how things change for most people. When people get older they get more conservative. It's always been that way. Having kids has a lot to do with it.

FG or Pulp ... which had the longer run at the Astro II?
Jun 8, 2022, 8:33 PM

|
I want to say Pulp Fiction was at the Astro for almost an entire academic year. Don't ask me which year, but there was hardly a weekend you couldn't have walked down town and watched Uma and John.
I also want to say Forrest Gump had almost as long a run, but I don't think it was a full fall and spring semester run.

fantastic memory to a) remember that they played at the Astro, b) played for that long there, and c) were out around the same time.
No way my college-aged brain cells could hone in on that level of detail anymore. jroberts®
