Miami getting former #1 QB recruit

Jake Heaps, the #1 QB from the 2010 recruiting class, is transferring from Kansas to Miami. He already graduated, so he can play immediately. Some points I found interesting about his story:
1. Heaps obviously hasn't lived up to the hype. He signed with BYU as the #1 QB prospect in the country. During his Freshman year he came on strong. After the starting QB got hurt, he came in and threw 13 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, and 1,259 yards in November and December alone. In the bowl game he broke several passing records and was the MVP. But it was all downhill from there. In the first 5 games of his sophomore season, he threw 3 touchdowns and 5 interceptions and couldn't complete anything downfield. He was benched and didn't play much for the rest of the season. Two things that struck me about this part of the story: 1. Being the #1 recruit doesn't mean automatic success. We have a #1 QB recruit in Derek Watson and I am very optimistic that he will succeed in our system, but it's certainly not something we should take as a given just yet. Second, Freshman phenoms don't always keep it going. I wouldn't be surprised to see Jameis Winston, crabs and all, have a big drop off in performance this year.
2. Heaps then transferred to Kansas. He had to sit out one year and then had another disappointing run this past season. This is what Charlie Weiss said when Heaps decided a few months ago to leave Kansas for his final year: “When somebody leaves, if I was a fan, I wouldn’t worry too much about them leaving. If they’re any good, they wouldn’t be leaving. That’s the way it is in football. If a guy wants to transfer, do you think he’s transferring because he’s playing? They don’t transfer because they’re playing.” Not sure whether that bitterness on Weiss' part was particular to this situation or whether he treats everyone like that, but hearing him talk like that about a former player makes me lose all respect for him, especially after reading about how hard Weiss recruited Heaps, even offering to personally drive to Utah to pick Heaps up so he could visit Kansas.
3. Speaking of coaches who don't deserve respect, if Spurrier had his way we might have played against Heaps last year. Spurrier tried hard to get Heaps to transfer to South Carolina instead of Kansas.
4. Heaps is a Mormon who grew up in the Northwest and has been married for 4 years. Miami and the U will be an interesting change.

Ugh, yep epic failure. There was a link in one of the articles to a slideshow of #1 recruits that didn't pan out and Derek Watson was on there. But yeah, still no excuse. My sincerest apologies to Deshaun for such an unfortunate mistake.

I think Olsen probably starts out the season, and unless he totally bombs in Louisville in their first game, he'll probably continue to start until Ryan Williams (another transfer) returns to play Nebraska. Heaps does have three years of (not very goodm, with the exception of his freshman year) starting experience, so maybe he will split some time with Olsen.
