Post your most horrible Marathon

Is this a real tnet page ?

On the porch in the rain (so don't have to jog today). Once I had to, but not these days.

I have paid for a number to jog in around 75 Marathons, but raced maybe just a dozen.
"How many" is not relevant with the kids who kept me going as we often jogged that distance or near in training.

My main long run loop happened to be 21.3 miles which I have done countless times.
One "very cold day" I finished up training at dark as the wind gained power.

I was beat to ####, no energy left (the purpose of a long run) and discovered I had locked myself out of my car.
I had to jog another couple miles to a pay phone and call collect to K to rescue me.
I jogged the miles back to the car, but needed to keep moving so hypothermia would not kill me.

Post your worst run.

I ran Disney and he anproblem with my planter fascia and could not finish. Two years later I completed the race. Training took years and many half marathons. Go tigers!

How I beat it

I suffered from it for 5 years. I went to 3 different podiatrists and tried everything. Foot in a boot while I sleep, wraps, ice, etc. Then I was getting ultrasound. Still nothing was any better at all. Then I went to a sports podiatrist (Palo Alto Sports Podiatry). They work with Stanford student athletes quite a bit. The office had signed photos from the athletes so it seemed promising. The podiatrist said the ultrasound is right but what I was getting was worthless. What I needed was shock-wave therapy - done with ultrasound.

He said it is three sessions and I want to warn you - it hurts, but you can take it. They go over the bottom of your foot with an ultrasound machine and I'll say it is turned up high. It can be quite painful. After three sessions he said, your foot will be somewhat numb for awhile so it will feel better. But it isn't better. Give it 3 months and you will feel the improvement.

Well it worked! I have been pain-free for more than a year. I bought a custom orthotic from them as well which I think is terrific.

The science behind it - he said your body has gotten used to the inflammation and has stopped trying to repair it. So you have to really shock it - painfully, to get it working to heal again. I trusted them because they are so respected in the area but also because I had to trust them, nothing else worked.

So check this out and see if anyone in your area can offer this. I googled it for you - in SC there is Greenville, Greer Podiatrist:
Dr. Gerard Rainer, DPM, Board Certified
864-288-0048

This website explains the treatment:

Skylon Marathon

This was the Skylon Marathon which goes from Buffalo, over the Peace Bridge and along the Niagara River ending right at the falls. It was the site of the Olympic Marathon trials when Frank Shorter ran.

I was a fairly fast runner - not super, but I expected to finish close to 3:15 - 3:25. I ended up finishing at 3:42.

I was excited to be in my first marathon and there were thousands of runners. The race started and I went out quickly. Despite a year of training and experience with track and x-country I completely forgot anything about pace and was flying along and enjoying the scene. At mile 15 I got a wake-up call when I saw my time for the first time in the race - I was just under 7 minutes/mile which was way too fast. At mile 19 I hit the proverbial wall. I had to walk, and walk more than I ever imagined I'd have to. Finally by mile 21 or 22 I was back to a slow run.

I trained the next year but a very bad dog bite during a training run put an end to that. I ran the Skylon when I was 30 I think, I stopped running when I was 60 because I was injured more than healthy. I now walk on a treadmill - today for one hour. I stay in shape but at 74 my running days are over.

So I have never ran a marathon. I have ran a couple half marathons and quite a few 10K and hundreds of 5k races. My worst was my very first official 5k in high school. I was good considering I had no race experience or knowledge but I started out way too fast and didn’t know what I was doing. I was running stride for stride with the state champion and when I hit the one mile mark I heard all the coaches yelling out the times 5:10, 5:11, 5:12 and I thought wow I am a minute and a half of my pace this is unbelievable. The problem was I was already done and the state champion was just getting started. I ran mile two in 9 minutes and mile three in 9 and a half minutes and finished with a time of around 23 minutes and 40 seconds which was 4 to 5 minutes slower than my practice runs.

At 50 I failed the cardio part of a physical at my job and a week later broke the NC state record for the 1/2 at Camp Lejeune.

I was about 40 for my first race - a 10K.
A friend who was a Secret Service Agent convinced me we would at least beat all the women.

He lied.

By mile 3 I was in horrible pain. After the race all went to a party to wind down, I went home to bed.

Ran the Marine Corps Marathon with a 4 hour pacer...

With the plan that my girlfriend at the time and zip would pick up the pace the last mile and finish ahead of the pacer to break 4 hours. Well, the pacer ran us a mile off course around mile 3 so we all had to really pick up the pace to make up for it to stay at a 4hr finish pace. That did it, I wasnt ready for that level of pace, and I crashed and burned on the back side of the Capitol at the 1/2 way point in the race. I struggled to the finish having to walk a lot of the remaining 13miles, but I did finish at like 5 and 1/2 hours. Cool Marathon to do, but it absolutely sucked!

So back in college I majored in Exercise science. My Physiology professor had to tell me to slow down because I was always asking questions chapters ahead. I just like the material. Well his format was a ton of case studies he wanted you to go to the library in groups and take 2-3 hours to do. A lot of "show your work" kinda stuff. I could look at a case study back then, and give you the answer in 10 seconds. I felt like I paid the college to learn the material, which i did, so why am I doing useless time consuming stuff, just going through the motions. My professor pulled me aside and said look, you can teach this class you're so far ahead. You know the material, but it isn't fair I give you an A when these others students did the work. So I'll give you an extra credit opportunity. However many Kilometers you run in an organized race, verifiable with a bib and online time, ill give you on your final grade.
I had like a C in the class, and the only remaining organized race within 3 states before the final was a 20k. So me and 2 other football players ran a half marathon. The funny part is we took off like a bat out of hell, leading everyone for about 6 miles. The problem was that we stopped for water. Blood pooled in our legs and when the people caught us we couldn't run after that! Haha old women were passing us, soccer moms that clearly didn't run normally, etc. Passing college football players! Hahaha learned a valuable lesson that day.

through the Garden of the Gods. Had an intestinal problem about mile 8.

If you want a real challenge do the Pikes Peak marathon. It is about an 8000 foot altitude change going up. The good news is you get the same change in reverse the way back. It is in August, but does occasionally get canceled due to snow.

I finished in 6 hours 10 minutes … the finish line was taken down at 6:30. At 6:25 a runner came in … love him for it kept my name from being the last one in the newspaper.

That was about 1990

Never ran a marathon, but many 10ks.  Worst was Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta on July 4th with 100 plus degree heat radiating off of the asphalt.  Barely finished due to the extreme heat.
