Maryland Looks to Be Gone

The University of Maryland moved close Sunday to formally applying for admission to the Big Ten Conference, and an announcement could come as soon as Monday.

The Board of Regents meets Monday to discuss the school’s proposal to leave the Atlantic Coast Conference after nearly 60 years.

It wasn’t immediately certain -- there is disagreement –over whether a formal regents vote is necessary for Maryland to proceed, or if Chancellor William E. (Brit) Kirwan can make the decision on his own. Either way, Maryland is hoping to obtain the regents’ endorsement.

The next step would be for Maryland to formally apply for admission to the Big Ten and for the conference’s council of presidents to vote.

Maryland believes joining the Big Ten would improve the fiscal health of its athletics program and open up academic partnerships. Opponents cite the long tradition with the ACC and the distances between Maryland and Big Ten schools, and would like more time to study the proposal.

Schools leaving the ACC are required to pay an exit fee of about $50 million that was approved – with Maryland and Florida State dissenting – in September. Such fees sometimes get mediated and the school ends up paying less.

Schools are required to give notice to the ACC by Aug. 15 and then wait about 10 months to leave. Given that and other considerations, it seems unlikely Maryland could start participating in the Big Ten until July 2014.

Now it's time for us to get out. 10-1 records don't even get you in the top ten in the ACC.

Who would replace Maryland?

I'm hearing UCONN

Yeah... UConn is NOT going to make Clemson

or FSU very happy with their garbage football program and possibly downward-spiraling basketball program now that Calhoun has retired. Have to do these three things, in order:

1) Beg ND to become all-in
2) Beg Penn State to join
3) Go after Louisville or Cincy

IMO...
1. ND is not going to join aslong as they have a chance to making it to the NC when the playoffs come around.
2. Why Penn State? Football program is on probation for awhile and will not contribute to anything dealing with football during this period. Great academic school but a lot of garbage is following them. Plus they are not that great in any other major sports.
3. If the ACC didn't want WVU, then I don't see them going after Louisville or Cincy b/c their "academics" are not good enough.

Good, hope they go. They officially $uck in everything other than lacrosse now that Gary Williams is gone. Their fans also $uck and their uniforms look like someone vomited on them. Let's go get Louisville.

Did you know that the CU-MD series is the longest...

...running consecutive ACC series rivalry?

Clemson has played the Terps EVERY year since the ACC was formed.

Won't you miss them just a little?

Not if they want to go, good luck and have fun, and we wish you well. There will be someone that wants to come in that can replace them in a heartbeat.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes! I will absolutely miss them...

But it shocks me and saddens me that they would even consider this move. For that, I say good riddance, get out if you don't appreciate what you've got.

Maryland, to me, is the ACC, and vice versa. They're a charter member of the conference.

Can't imagine a better school to vote off the Island

I grew up near College Park and attended every FB and BB Clemson game (with my Clemson grad dad) during my time there in the '70s. Maryland is more bush league than SCAR.
