Recruiting This Week

Apr 28, 2021, 9:43 AM

We are on to the second update of the week. I would suggest reading my post on 23' quarterback recruits from earlier this week if you have not already.

More and more targets are planning trips to schools in June each day here are a few below:

-Jaren Kanak is starting to get attention from the staff is a someone to potential fill a linebacker spot this cycle. Clemson took notice when he posted an insane time at a recent track meet, 10.66 100 time, he will be on campus June 1st. He does not have an offer.

-Class of 23' DE Tomarrion Parker will visit Clemson June 5-6. Parker is out of the same school that EJ Williams and Justyn Ross attended.

-Clemson CB target Toriano Pride will visit Auburn June 25. He will visit OSU the weekend before he attends Clemson's Elite Retreat. I still like where Clemson is as of now, think OSU and Clemson split him and Ryan Turner.

-Another linebacker that Clemson has on their radar is DeMario Tolan. He will come to Clemson June 11th. lSU, FSU, and Miami all involved.

- Payton Kirkland, big time class of 23' offensive lineman, will be back to Clemson for the Dabo Swinney Camp June 2nd. He was able to attend Clemson's spring game earlier this month. Kirkland is a big OT(6-7, 317), and he has a lot of plans for visits this June, but I get the feeling that this could turn into a Clemson vs OSU battle in the end.

-Speaking of Clemson vs OSU battles. 4* DE Kenyatta Jackson has just locked in an official to OSU for June 25-27. As of now I do not know a date when he will make his way out to Clemson. Like I said Clemson vs. OSU, with Oklahoma making a strong push.

-Keep an eye on Luke Montgomery, one of the class of 23' top OT. Has expressed interest in Clemson and wanting to visit, should be noted that he is from Ohio. Maybe Clemson can pull a Carman or Miller and go into Ohio and take the top OT.

-5* DT target Travis Shaw visited UNC's Spring game this past weekend. He gave an interesting interview after where he said even he though Jalon Walker was going to Clemson. That interview further cements that UGA and UNC are going to be tough competition to land him.

-4* Brenen Thompson is Clemson's lone WR offer right now. He has made plans to take an official visit to Alabama for their Nov. 6th game against LSU. Cade is recruiting him hard, and I like where Clemson is, but he will wait until the Fall to visit Clemson for an official. Watch the local schools such as Texas and OkSU along with Bama.

The next post will detail targets at WR if Clemson chooses to take a 3rd and some news on Branson Robinson.

That Shaw tidbit just further illustrates the fishiness of the Walker recruitment. You'll never convince me that just because uga threw some nfl numbers at him he decided to do a 180. Paw, like you previously stated i guess Walker and Shaw aren't super close friends. Gives me hope unless uga throws those NUMBERS at Shaw too.

Yeah one of the strangest recruitments I have ever followed. His own high school teammates thought Clemson a week before. I heard that Shaw's father always wanted to play for UGA, whether that is why he chose them I do not know. This one did not smell like $, because let us be real we know UGA would have no issue doing that and Clemson has lost recruits to them before because of it, but I honestly do not know.

I read where Walker wants to go to dental school which Clemson doesn't have and Georgia does.

Not worried about the numbers UGA throws at them, its the cash that they pay.

I get the feeling that the Nelson kid out of Cali is truly considering Clemson. I know Oklahoma is the perceived frontrunner but I think Clemson has a real chance here. Do you agree?

Re: Recruiting This Week

Apr 28, 2021, 7:27 PM

Absolutely I think that Clemson has a shot I made a post earlier this week detaining those plans. Here is some of the important stuff from that post.

The first weekend in June Clemson is set to host the #4 overall player for the class of 23' QB Malachi Nelson. Clemson has yet to offer Nelson, but I would say that it is a forgone conclusion that happens when he attends. The lack of an offer has not bothered Nelson, as he talks with DJ, Nelson is from Cali and the two are good friends, he understands how Clemson operates as they usually do not offer QBs until they see them throw in person.

Nelson is also bringing his 5* WR teammate Makai Lemon. Nelson and Lemon plan on attending college together, and unlike a lot of recruits who say this I think that they actually will be a package deal. Nelson and Lemon both visited Clemson in the Fall for a game and enjoyed the trip, they went to Bama after and I think they plan to go their again this June.

Also in the month of June Nelson and Lemon plan on attending Oklahoma for a visit to their barbecue cookout, hopefully Riley is not making the brisket. At this point they should be considered the lead team, but this has all the makings of turning into an OU and Clemson battle that will be decided by the visits this June. Nelson wants to commit early so that he can begin recruiting for his team. I see this as a Summer decision.

Worth noting that Nelson said USC was his leader a few weeks ago and he was close to committing, but they recently offered a quarterback after they told him they would not, and he said that he will now most likely not visit USC again after breaking his trust. LOL USC.

To answer your question I think that OU is the leader right now based on his relationship with Riley. However, the faith based aspect of Clemson and his relationship with DJ are going to help. This is going to be decided by visits and Clemson can absolutely land a kid once they get them on campus, that is what we have been waiting for since the pandemic started for Clemson recruiting.

Thanks as always. 2 quick questions. I realize Bama only has 6 commits, we have 4.

1. Should we be concerned that uga, osu, some others have 10-13 commits.

2. How much, if any will it hurt us that recruits are only able to camp 1 day. Or is that being set by NCAA and every school has to follow as well. Tia. Just curious and always a nervous nelly after the 18 and 19 classes.

Re: Recruiting This Week

Apr 28, 2021, 8:48 PM

Thanks Clemgalways,
1. You are right that Clemson does not have the number of commits that they are accustomed to at this point. However, you have to look at two big factors: first Clemson is not going to sign anywhere near the numbers that UGA and OSU are this class, I keep coming up with around 18 when you look at scholarships, UGA and OSU will sign around 25 or more. Second, the lack of visits has made it very difficult for a number of recruits to decide where they want to go. So, I would not be concerned right now, but if after June/July you do not have 10+ I think that you start to get concerned. Remember last year everyone thought that Bama had lost their mojo on the recruiting trail and they went on to sign the best class in history.

2. Yeah that is hard to answer at this point. The Swinney Camp used to be a multiple day camp, but this year it sounds like it may just be a 1 day occurrence with more dates, which I assume is what you are referencing. I think that it would hurt the bond that some of the recruits are able to form when they are together for multiple days, playing things like Swinney Ball at night. I think just being able to be on campus and around the coaches and other recruits should not change much though. I would assume that this would be with NCAA guidelines so that a bunch of kids are not all in dorm rooms together.

Agree we must avoid a 19 class at all costs.

LOL. If you are refereeing to one that they self-reported. yes. That should have ended last October I believe, but I could be mistaken.

What's your take on the WR Williams from Dutch Fork? Do you feel like there is a significant difference between him and the Spearman kid from TX?

Re: Recruiting This Week

Apr 28, 2021, 10:11 PM

I really really like the Williams kid. Both he and Thompson are different body types than Clemson typical recruits, Williams 6ft and Thompson 5'10. The biggest difference has to be speed, not saying Williams is not fast, but Thompson may be the fastest guy this cycle and could be a great slot receiver and return man. In my person opinion if Clemson only takes 2 WR this cycle, with Randall already being committed, take Thompson, if you take 3 offer Williams and take all three. Thompson reminds me of Waddle out of Bama and if Clemson winds up taking 3 Randall, Thompson, and Williams would be one of the better and more diverse halls at WR they have had in recent years.
