Reflecting on it - A_Terrell did indeed commit pass interference

When the contact between AT and the Duke WR happened, AT was not in the process of making a play in the ball. AT’s back was to the durection of the thrown ball.
Sure, the Duke WR knocked AT down (AT got knocked down flat in his back) when the contact took place. But AT was moving (not a static obstacle, which in that case, AT would not have been called for PI).
The contact thus took place while both players were moving, but only one of them (the Duke WR) was mak7ng a play on the ball.
Hate it, but that was PI on Aveion Terrell.
Refs made the correct call.

Yep they sure did but some here will never agree even if show it frame by frame in slow motion bc they need an excuse to blame so they don’t have to blame Dabo.
I saw it live. Clearly DPI or defensive holding whichever you want to call.
Either way would have given them an automatic first down so doesn’t really matter which.
Bottom line… was absolutely a defensive penalty no matter how much others here want to cry about it.

Making a play for the ball with two hands in AT's chest?

You can call PI on both if you want.

Pass interference:
Intent to impede: The action must be an obvious intent to impede the receiver's opportunity to make a catch.

Watch the play from the start when Terrell is literally grabbing him from the snap of the ball.
Yall are focusing on just the end. Watch the entire play from the snap.

Ok and?
Either way… it’s an automatic first down which puts the ball right where it basically was anyway.
Also… you could tell when Dabo called that last timeout the play before they scored… I believe he told the defense to let them score which was another mistake he made bc he assumed Cade would go down and get a FG.
That’s why he was laughing after they called the offensive PI on us on our next drive bc he knew he made yet another mistake.
That’s why you don’t let them score there but he had zero confidence we would have stopped them anyway.

Forgotten by most, but nonetheless worth noting:
Dabo wasted a second half T/O while we were on offense back in 3rd Qtr because, as is so frequently the case, Clemson coaching staff had not mentally prepared themselves what to do and which various formations + personnel combinations should be used in selected 4th and short situations.
We are seldom prepared about what to do in those situations. Therefore, we burn T/O’s that better coached / better prepared opposing teams do not do.
Since those situations always our coaches undecided about what to do, they burn a T/O to atone for poor preparation so they can have time to get their act together.
Is it easy for a coaching staff to do as I suggest? Heck no! The issue in hand is not whether it’s easy to do, or ‘can you, RTD, do any better?’ Nope. The issue is whether Clemson’s smart coaching staff is competitively ‘smart’ with an opposing team’s ’smarter’ coaching staff.
Against a lot of teams, our coaches are as smart. (There are teams with coaches which are not as smart as ours re Miami.) unfortunately, we face several teams each year where those opposing coaches are either smarter or better prepared. During Dabo’s first twelve or so seasons, his accumulation of superior talent obscured that lack of situational preparedness that loses tightly contested games. Since the start of the 2021 season, that habit of mediocre situational coaching preparedness is hurting us.

The ‘intent to impede’ sounds like a ‘mens rai’ legal concept (I.e., the person doing the ‘bad thing’ had to consciously intend to do the ‘bad thing’).
Whether intent or by accident, Terrell was not moving to avoid the Duke WR. He was backing up, which was a conscious act in his part. Why was he backing up? Because he was guarding the WR. The WR ran into him while he was moving = defensive PI.
There is a similar situation on badly underthrown deep passes. The WR is racing downfield, with the DB hot on his heels. When the WR recognizes that the pass is severely underthrown, the WR slows down quickly. At this point the DB is in a Catch-22 situation.
If he is trying to peek back while actively covering the WR, then he runs into the WR. Defensive PI.
If he doesn’t turn to look look for the ball and the WR stops and then reverses direction to go for the pass … and in so doing runs into the not-stationary DB (and the path for the WR to catch the ball is consequently impeded), then, again … defensive PI.
The only ways for the DB to not be called for PI are (1) fall down or run out of bounds to keep from getting in the WRs way (this doesn’t happen … but it would work to avoid a defensive PI call) -or- (2) turn around and make a play for the ball (which is an extremely difficult thing to do in that situation, but no one ever said playing DB was easy). In the absense of (1) or (2), then it’s defensive PI.

I actually think the correct call SHOULD have been defensive holding on Terrell, not PI. He initiated contact about 5 yards past the LOS and prevented the receiver from making his break.

After having a bourbon and reflecting on it, the only conclusion I can draw is that you are full of sh!t.

I need some of your bourbon to cloud my mind. I wish that I could blame our loss on a bad call by the ref. That was my initial belief.
Rewatching the play made me realize that AT committed the penalty.

Yep it was super obvious on the replay, not sure why everyone is crying about it. Maybe we shouldn't let Duke score 40+ in the future so these calls won't matter.
