class of folks eat that nasty ole green bean casserole, just saying I'd rather have just the beans without the mess. As for mac and cheese and mashed 'taters, when done well those are always good. Sorry if you went to a poors house once and the best they could do was stuff from a box.

I’m so lost. Is this because the recipes were printed on the side of cans and boxes after much thought and research? I find this whole thing kind of funny.
You can eat this, but not that, on this particular day. You can cook these 12 things, but these 3 thing make you dumb. And then people say, well this holiday is all about family. I feel like this is a a setup to catch me in some kinda p&r trap. If it tastes good and my favorite aunt fixed it, I’m gonna shove it in my face as fast as I possibly can. And you bet Imma smash them taters amd put some extra gravy on em, and you better bet imma eat some dadgum green bean casserole. Best dish ever invented for canned green beans. Best dish ever invented for fresh snapped green beans. You better find out how to clean some mushrooms and milk a cow and fry some onions. Cause that’s how green beans were meant to be served. And as far as Mac and cheese is concerned. Yeah, it’s not traditional. But you tell me that somebody shows up with that perfect Mac and cheese, where the custard to cheese to salt ratio is just perfect… you ain’t gonna have a bite? Yeah you know you are. I just don’t get it. Eat what you can. Be thankful. Don’t celebrate the holiday if you realize it’s inappropriate. Just meet with family more often and eat the best dishes you can. And always, always, always serve cranberry sauce with turkey. Jellied and whole… just put it in my face!

But we like to hand out comments around here that show our preferences and biases.
I, for one, have never made cornbread dressing. Still deciding on that one as I am not sure I have the capacity to get it done with all the other dishes I am prepping.
Today is shopping day - already have most, but I will get stuff today that I can prep today or tomorrow.
Tomorrow I will make broccoli salad and pound cake and begin prep on others.
Final menu
Turkey and gravy Ham - Honey baked variety (headed there today) Dressing Squash Casserole Broccoli salad Carrots in brown sugar, maybe with a touch of bourbon Mushrooms (family tradition and somewhat of a joke on me) Mac and cheese Ba'corn Dinner rolls Cranberry - both the canned version and a cranberry sauce
Desert is homemade pound cake, Junior's Cheesecake and a caramel apple pie with cookies.

My southern grandmother was not much of a baker but she always had a poundcake made by some lady who made poundcakes and also a cake made of lots of thin layers.. I spent years figuring out how to replicate the latter

For Thanksgiving I should add, but probably assumed. I did order 7 more though and handed the other one's to the homeless. I was alone that Thanksgiving. I went to Domino's just to buy 1, but while I was feeling alone and melancholy I decided to make myself feel better by doing a good deed.

from the noodle orchard, home made bread, and pecan pie. Oh and sweet tater casserole.
If I'm guessing.
Now the green beans aren't a casserole. But she takes Hanover green beans in a can and cooked them for 327 hours on simmer with some beef broth. You could eat them toothless.

How does one keep the skin from turning into rubber when smoking birds? Seems like every time I have smoked turkey (or chicken) the meat is excellent but the skin is horrible. Is there some secret way to get the skin crisp and not chewy?
Don't get me wrong, smoked chicken and turkey are great, the meat is awesome. But the skin.....seems to become a throw-away item.

I hate the stuff with a passion.
So this year I put my foot down and said I'll do the beans to serve with our 5 lb standing rib roast.
Here's the recipe:

If you're not from old money, you're white trash.
You sound like you got a little yankee in you, boy.

Did your ancestors sail right into Charleston?

My dad's mom was 1/4 Cherokee and my mother had some injun in her even before daddy married her. Oh, my sister came across in a canoe, does that count?
I had one ancestor who fought in the Revolutionary War and one in the Civil. The Civil war guy who bears the last name fought for the south. Idk about the Rev War guy.

1. mashed taters - absolute necessity 2. green bean casserole - crucial, and must have French's fried onions on top 3. mac n cheese - meh, guess I'll have some if it's there

I'll concede this one to you. I embrace the facts of my identity.
I have made an effort to improve with the next generation. As opposed to giving my middle name, Jethro, to my son, I named him Jeffro - I think it will be a valuable contribution that advances the culture.
You can slowly infringe upon my rights and...[this 3 page section has been redacted and moved to the P&R board with the rest of the things nobody cares about]...but you will never take my taters and grain ba'ean cass'role!

Don't care
And this year we'll have box Mac n cheese bc the 2 yr old n 9 month old haven't acquired (aka won't eat) the artisan cheeses I use.
So with that, I bought it at Costco.
