Mac hardware doods, need some help

Feb 26, 2016, 1:39 PM

Is soccerkrzy around? He and other mac doods may be able to help. My iMac at work has (4) 8GB slots for RAM.

I'm thinking of buying the 16GB kit from crucial to make it 24GB.

1) Is 24GB overkill given the relatively basic nature of my other hardware (SATA drive, 3.2GHz i5 Dual-Core)?
2) Is having (2) 4GB sticks and (2) 8GB going to cause any issues? Do the 4 slots need to be evenly allocated?

I've upgraded the RAM substantially in my other Mac, but it's the newest model. This one is older and I'm trying not to waste too much of my time.

Don't mix and match RAM.***

Brand, or stick sizes? Crucial is the brand I generally buy through.

If you want 24GB, install 3 8GB sticks.

Yeah it will probably work with mix/match but IME it brings a ton of headaches.

Technically speaking if you are to mix and match

Put two identical sticks in the 1&3 slots and whichever other type in the 2 slot.

I'd still recommend sticking with identical sticks.

Are you having issues with/using all of your current RAM?

Feb 26, 2016, 5:38 PM

I agree about not mix and matching (at least 4GB vs. 8GB - if you keep the same size, it's been my experience that all the RAM will run at the speed of the slowest DIMM/SO-DIMMs). Unless you're currently maxing out your existing RAM, you probably won't see any benefit worth what you'd pay for the extra RAM.
