Loyalty is a strange bedfellow

Dec 10, 2021, 12:44 PM

Loyalty can be a misunderstood concept in sports.

I was a highly sought-after tennis player in Highschool. I narrowed it down to 2 schools. Stanford and Clemson. I visited both schools and made a "soft" commitment to Stanford in 11th grade. Which means I basically held the right to visit other schools up to a certain date.

I ended up at the invitational camp that Coach Chuck Kriese held for HS players at Clemson, and changed my mind that weekend. I asked Coach to call the Stanford coach with me, to which obliged. On the last drill of the last day, I heard a pop in my right knee, then excruciating pain, that abruptly ended my dreams of a college tennis career. Two years later, playing in the city championships, I did the same to my left knee.

To this day, I still feel a sense of loyalty to both the Stanford and Clemson tennis programs. I can only imagine how strong that loyalty to both would have been had I ended up playing for both of them. But one thing I know, is that leaving one school to better my career would not have been done out of disloyalty.

Every one of these kids decommitting or transferring today seem to show great respect for Clemson in their letters and social posts. And why wouldn't they? We're an incredible program that treats them with the respect they deserve. I don't see any evidence that they're being selfish or disloyal to anyone by changing their mind. Changing your mind based on current facts and conditions is far different than lying to someone.

Lets cut these kids some slack. They're doing what they feel is right for them and their families. I hope that we'd all do the same.

Agreed. They show the same loyalty as the coaches, that leave (have left and maybe leaving) for a better opportunity for themselves and their families. Why should we expect anything else from the players, especially those that committed to a coach that has since departed for his own higher ground.

It sux but it is what it is.
