It's all about security.
Can you imagine 50,000 Clemson fans getting out of the stadium downtown Atlanta at midnight? All the fans coming from the stadium to the parking lots are unarmed too!
It is all about gun safety! They are looking out for Clemson fans. We should thank them!
Take your $2 Bills to spend in the bars! It works. The bartenders in New Orleans still talk about Clemson $2 bills, and have them on the walls!
Go Tigers, Wreck Tech!

GT is the home team, and bizarrely they got to make this ridiculous demand to avoid it looking like a Clemson home game. I don't understand why the game organizers allowed it. Bizarre.

Atlanta's city government is clueless.
Too stupid to know that the smaller crowd is not good for Atlanta's business.

Tech's last two non-Covid home games versus us (2016 & 2018) featured over 50,000 fans each at Grant Field, Tech's two highest attended games since then, and healthy orange in the crowd. So they opt to screw over us, their local restaurants and hotels, and the ACC angling for a home field advantage that they can't generate on their own.
Not exactly a great audition for a B1G invite, and a clear testament that they would belong in a 2nd division in the ACC for football along with UVA, Wake, Duke, BC, and Syracuse should the top league programs force a football split.
Go Tigers!

I agree with your overall point, but for the record, the UGA-GT games at Bobby-Dodd in 2017 & 2019 both drew 55,000 (healthy dose of red as well) - which was more than either of the Clem-GT games at Bobby-Dodd in 2016 & 2018 (I think 54K & 51K)

Aug 19, 2022, 8:09 AM

45k tickets is probably plenty for this game given that it’s in Atlanta on a Monday night with a work day following.
I’m not sure what the true motivation was for Ga Tech (after all, it is their home game) but I don’t see it being a big issue.
Are there problems with getting tickets for those wanting to be there? If so, then my Devils Advocacy stands corrected.

A loser mentality like this is what keeps the ACC behind other conferences. Just one example, but it is how most schools approach football -- managing expectations and maintaining status quo.
The commissioner should have stepped in and insisted on a full seating arrangement for our marquee game. GA Tech needs to invest and put a decent product on the field so they can draw 70k in their home city of 6M+

Atlanta is Tech's home city but the general population does not follow Tech football in the slightest. It is a pro sports town and that does not mean they all pull for the Falcons - but they have a passing interest. The college football fans in Atlanta follow UGA football. Not hard to see. I think the Jackets brought around a thousand fans to the Valley last year. They are not covered in any Ga media outside of the city as they are a complete afterthought. Ga State is a mile from Campus and has a similar team with a little less interest. It's not a college football town.

This is mostly true. I live in the ATL and I see at least as many, probably more, Clemson stickers and license tags on cars as GT stuff. Not sure if we really outnumber them or they just don't give a poop, but the Jacket fan base here seems pretty pitiful. Additionally, though it make me queasy just to think of it, Atlanta United soccer fans seem like the top draw here, outnumbering even the Foulcans.

bills anywhere in the area. Perhaps some restaurants and other merchants will notice, as they're used to seeing these on our gameday weekends, and raise the issue with the Atlanta tourism folks. Tech essentially opted not to allow for an extra 20,000 or so to visit and patronize local businesses on a Sunday and Monday - they should be called out on it from those that help support them. The tradition started in Atlanta - would be interesting to kibosh it completely for a game for a similar message.

I don't know what the normal arrangement for ACC games is . . . does the visiting team get a percentage of the overall ticket sales? If so, I suppose this means Clemson (AND GT) are out any percentage due them that might have been produced for any number beyond 45K, right?

If the Peach Bowl thought that they could fill the stadium, then I guess that they would have pushed back on GT's request or denied it. It sounds like the Peach Bowl management thinks that they can't fill enough upper-deck seats to justify the added expense of operating the upper deck.
It kinda stinks for the fans because a lot of those midfield upper-deck seats are a LOT better than the lower level (end-zone-ish) seats.

I agree. The move is probably smart from an economics perspective.
It’s a made for TV game given it’s date and time. Having a full lower bowl in that huge place will look better on TV and appearances count to those making the decisions.
Apparently there are still plenty of tickets available at or below face value for any Clemson fans who really want to be there late on a Monday night in Atlanta.
Even with 45k seats, this game will still probably not be a sell-out.

I wonder if this will really be a better look for a national TV audience and for the SEC dominated ESPN. My take is that ESPN will have plenty to say about it during the game, and widely panned by the national media. This is a very bad look for thee ACC which is desperately trying to remain relevant in the college football world. Ask yourselves what other conference would allow a #4 ranked member of their conference to be treated this way.

I agree that it's not a great look, but GT is a small school with a fanbase that has become dejected after years of mediocrity. I could imagine a similar scenario if, say, UGA played Vanderbilt at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.
