Let me take a moment here......

|
Following up from earlier, I have made the choice to stop drinking for a while, long while, maybe forever. I don't want to say forever, but we will see how life develops.
Nothing really all that bad, no law enforcement, wife or friends issue, but mainly I found myself just thinking about when that next drink would be or when I was going to be able to get out of the house and go grab a drink. I started keeping liquor at the house, something I never did before my parents passed and now that I have started keeping bottles around, its a constant shot (after 3pm was my rule) here or there, especially at night.
The other day, I was out have beers with my buds at 11am. Not really a big deal on a holiday weekend, but when I got home and my wife asked me how lunch was, I was kind of drunk, didnt want to admit it, so I lied, just said "great" and laid on the couch and took a nap.....during that nap, I missed taking the kids to our pool and then didn't wake up till early afternoon. Basically ruining a whole day.
As you all know. I watched my dad die to cancer and although I dont blame him for cancer or dying, I want to be around longer for my kids. I dont want to miss a pool day/afternoon. I want to be more productive, I want to be the person that I know that I can be.
I also find that when drinking, I go weeks without saying prayers or thinking a lot about others. I am just thinking about drinking. Well, its been 6 days and I pray every night, I am more helpful at home, I am getting back into hobbies and guess what.....instead of drinking beer while my kids play, my son and I have shot basketball every night. God is good, even you don't believe, this is a moment where I do and its helping me a ton.
I can't say I will never drink again at a pool party of cookout, but I can say that I am done with daily drinking and I think I have a new rule that will work. If I am going to have some drinks, my wife has to be around. Its only when I get away from her, does alcohol get away from me.
I wanted to post on reddit as anonymous, but I hate reddit and I thought maybe some of you might be able to relate and I know a lot of you....so if I could help you stop the daily habit too that's all the better.
Several of you told me I would get here eventually, well I am here and thanks for pushing me. I already feel so much better and I cannot believe how my body is responding, especially my mind.

32 years ago. My 25 and 27 year old children never saw me drunk and I never missed anything because of it. Its been a great life. It wasnt so great having all that "fun" in the old days.

please keep us posted. This is not easy to do and support from others can help. We are pulling for you.
I am amazed at the amount of alcohol some posters say they drink. Just mind blowing.
You have my thoughts and prayers.
Enjoy your family!

but totes worth it if it makes your life better. I'm not a judgemental type, but just reading through some of your posts over the years, it was clear that the booze had to be detracting from your personal life, and I'm glad you're putting that first.
Like others have said, give any of us (except 7spots) a shout if you need any motivation or accountability. You know me...I'll call a mo-fo out if they want me to. Good luck.

That's one thing my parents never did and I've always wanted to be able to do the same for my kids when I had em.
It's the hardest when traveling and/or entertaining for work, but most folks understand. Stay strong man

To drinking. He was a alcoholic and suffered from depression. Took his life. My wife discovered his body in the garage where he hung himself. He got in the downward spiral and could not pull out.
Kudos to you. Do it for your family.

I took 15 months off from drinking. Didn't have a drop. Now I only drink one or two every now and then. Similar to you, before that's all I looked forward to on the weekends. It was a great hiatus to get a better routine in place. I suggest at least not a drop for 6 months. Challenge yourself not to drink during situations where you want to, your supposed to, and where its easy. Once you defeat that....then get a new routine in place...then you're ok to have a drink or two again. I wasn't physically addicted...it was just a weekend hobby. Now I just play bad golf, take care of my grass, spend more time with family, and oh the big one...I'm getting married.

seriously though. Good job on noticing that stuff.
I've cut way back drinking for a couple of weeks now. I sleep a lot better and feel better during the day.

awesome to read. I still drink but it's a lot less. I sleep better at night and there is more jingle in my pockets. I've lost about 10 lbs. this year. Good luck and keep praying.
