and how Ford was let go was going to be successful. Clemson nation was divided rather than united on academics and athletics. Of course, his recruiting did nothing to help him as time went on. Those were dark years that continued through West.

Wrong time, wrong place for Ken Hatfield. Not a bad coach. He just came into a tough situation where the Clemson fans were ticked and the administration did not care about football a whole lot. With that lack of support, most coaches would not be able to please anyone. From what I understand, Hatfield did not do due diligence, and accepted the job without researching the situation carefully here. Not exactly sure why he came to a team in a different conference, where recruiting would be a challenge for a newcomer to the area. I think he and Frank Broyles at Arkansas were in each others' crosshairs. Just a bad job by the Clemson admin letting Danny go. Started 20 years of mediocrity.

I know this may be an unpopular opinion, but going by straight win %, Hatfield wasn't close to the worse. Many variables as to why Clemson fans really didn't support, and alright disliked him, but stating the facts - Overall win % at Clemson:
Ford: .760
Hatfield: .707
West: .525
Bowden: .615
I'm sure some will argue that he had Ford's players for some of that time, but he was pushed out after an 8 win season. West was the worse and Bowden certainly wasn't any better of a coach overall, but tends to get the label (from some) of the coach that began the momentum to change the direction of the program, in some respects (perhaps recruiting Davis and Spiller?).
