Last play of Miami/UVA

Oct 28, 2023, 6:45 PM

A Miami player went out of bounds and touched the player (in bounds) that had the ball while he was still out of bounds. HOW is that legal? How?

There are only two rules about players going out of bounds in NCAA football.

NCAA: The only 2 restrictions about players going out of bounds and returning are:
1) A kicking team player may not voluntarily go out of bounds and return. 5yd penaty from previous spot.
2) An eligible offensive receiver may not voluntarily go out of bounds and return and be the first to touch a legal forward pass. Loss of down at the previous spot.

So as we have seen. A kicking team player can't run out of bounds to get down field without being blocked. But merely going out of bounds (pushed or otherwise) and running right back in to make a play is not illegal.

This isn’t about a player going out of bounds and returning, it is more like the rule that woukd apply to a player being out of bounds and the ball being in bounds (on a fumble) and gaining control of the ball while it is in bounds but the player is partially out of bounds.

I’m sure there is a rule that woukd that states a player out of bounds can’t physically touch and keep another player in bounds in order for that player to be able to advance the ball.

No rule other than the ball is down.

I was gonna ask the same thing. He didn’t intentionally push his teammate to keep him in bounds but I’m sure there is a rule.

He was definitely out of bounds and the runner was in contact.

The funny thing was, post game interview with the runner they asked him how he stayed in bounds.

He said he didn’t know but the grace of God kept him in bounds.

I don't see the issue if the player OOB wasn't touching the ball. I'm sure a defensive player who is OOB makes contact with a ball carrier quite often.

I was not talking about the defensive player being out of bounds. His teammate was out of bounds and because they touched it could have inadvertently kept him in bounds. Thus assisting him in scoring the touchdown.

Just curious if there is a rule that covers that.

I’ll go even farther.

I think the lineman’s left arm actually touched the ball that the running back was carrying while said lineman was out of bounds.

Would that stop the play if an offensive player is out of bounds and touching the ball?

I know he wasn’t the one in possession of the ball but he did touch it.

i just found it odd that no one on TV even mentioned it. like it was never a thought to anyone in the booth, or a coach, or anything... and, it SEEMS like it would definitely be illegal.. or at the very least cause the runner to be down at the point of contact. idk
