For all of you “portal fanatics” here’s a quote from Kirby Smart about his view of using the portal vs Dabo’s view of using the portal.
Bottomline, not much difference….
“Yeah I think that’s much ado about nothing,” Smart said. “You have who you have, right? So in the spring you have I’m going to guess 90, 95 percent of your roster. You might pick up some after that. I think everybody makes a big deal about that.”
While Smart has routinely been able to plug holes through the portal, he isn’t one of those coaches that tries to overhaul his roster every offseason with transfers. In fact, like Swinney, Smart said he prefers to focus on high school recruiting and development.
“I’m like Dabo. If I could keep my entire roster my roster, I’d be all for keeping my roster my roster,” Smart added. “I believe in the kids we sign, I believe in the kids we recruit. I want to grow them to get better. It’s not realistic to think you’re going to keep all your players right now. What is realistic you need to be operating with as much depth as possible and it’s made it tougher to do that.”

No one is asking for Dabo to "overhaul his roster every offseason with transfers". They just want him to "plug holes through the portal" like Kirby does.

The biggest holdup to Dabo going into the portal and getting a few players where we need them is Dabo doesn't believe the players we have need to be replaced
For example, even if Dabo used the portal and picked up a solid QB, it's very doubtful that he would be immediately be the guy over Cade
Dabo can't use the portal bc he doesn't believe that he needs to. That's the real problem

Plug holes and stop wasting scholarships on kids who will never contribute. Fill those spots with physically developed kids from the portal. He will also have to drop the idea of using NIL only for retention. Gonna have to add recruitment enticement into the NIL equation. I realize that was not the intent of NIL but everyone is doing it.

That Dabo isn’t competition for portal players. He said it himself, he would if he could. Well Dabo is doing regardless of if he can or not.

Portal or no portal they are currently out recruiting everyone else by a lot. Blame on what you want but we are living in the 10-15 range. Recruiting needs to ramp up in a big way.

Kirby gets a small number of players from the portal to offset losses they have every year. Probably upgrades for the most part. He isn’t worried about hurting feelings because he is there to win ball games. Makes perfect sense.
Dabo? Well, he is committed to his recruits and their families. admirable but not a winning is the bottom line philosophy.

Not much difference? Really? Does do as I say and not as I do come to mind? Kirby "loves" the Dabo way when it comes to the portal because it gives him a leg up. Dabo is a great recruiter. If he approached the portal like he approaches HS recruiting, he would get some highly selective, solid talent to fill gaps and add depth.
Kirby is dumb like a fox so don't by into the "aw shucks" mentality.

You have no clue what you’re talking about if you think we’re claiming he needs to overhaul roster.
A few WRs and a Grayson McCall qb in the off-season would’ve been enough to make a massive difference with our team.
