Kellen Jones

Aug 7, 2013, 10:19 AM

The man puts on 12 pounds of muscle and the coaches have nothing but praise for his hustle and work ethic. Someone remind me again why he's not being considered for a starting spot? I'm beginning to see why Kellen is getting pissed.

Let's be honest: I'd trust him over the injury-plagued Steward and the yet-to-live-up-to-his-potential Anthony any day. Just saying.

Coaches know how to motivate players. Sounds like the motivation of Mr. Jones is working. Never know what you might see when we line up against UGA.

why would you trust someone that apparently isn't where

Aug 7, 2013, 10:22 AM

he's supposed to be on the field?

D1 offensive coordinators will eat him up until he stops freelancing. i imagine the coaches will try to get him in situationally to limit his exposure until he proves he can maintain the d's integrity.

You would?

Guy hasn't played a down in 2 years.

Have to respectfully disagree with your last sentence. Hard to trust a guy you've never seen play a snap, no matter how good he looks in practice and during the offseason. At this point we just have to trust Venables to put the best group on the field. I feel like we can work into having a nice rotation of five or six guys where the talent and ability is roughly the same, no matter which guys are on the field. I can definitely see Jones breaking into that kind of a system by the time the ball gets spotted, but we'll see. Trust the coaches, my friend.

Well-said, homeslice1479. I do indeed hope Venables will bring out his full potential (as well as that of Steward and Anthony). I trust the best starting 12 will be on the field come the 31st. I guess I'm just so anxious to see a solid defense, instead of the lackluster group we've been stuck with the past few years. Go Tigers!

I hope the best starting 11 are on the field. 12 would mean a penalty.....

I coached high school football for over seven years and got questioned every day why one player was not playing over another. Believe me, you want the best players on the field and if Mr Jones isn't out there, there is a reason why. Maybe after contact drills today, that will change.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uhhhh.....

Aug 7, 2013, 10:32 AM [ in reply to Re: Kellen Jones ]

if the best starting 12 are on the field come the 31st, we are going to start-off the game with a penalty for illegal participation or having too many men on the field. ;)

maybe for unc's game against usuc.

Aug 7, 2013, 10:38 AM

heck, he may make us play with 10.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Even if he isn't starting on Aug 31

Aug 7, 2013, 11:26 AM

There is little doubt Venables will give him some play time in that game and a chance to prove he is worthy of starting at a later point. Starting him seems risky given his past.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

chances are Steward or Stephone will get hurt again and then

Aug 7, 2013, 11:45 AM

Jones will have the starting spot anyways, but that's beside the point. Look, if the coaches say he needs to improve in pass coverage and his understanding of the playbook, then I believe them. It's a lot more complicated than just trying to sack the quarterback.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Steward or Stephone will be doing the hurting this year.***

WHY even post about possible injuries to players????

Careless comments especially for Steward who has fought through many adversaties and due nothing but respect IMO.

Kellen said it himself in the interview ... pass coverage.

Aug 7, 2013, 1:25 PM

He said himself that one of the skills he needs to work on is pass coverage.

If he's as dedicated as he seems to be, he'll get there eventually.

Didn't he have a Pick 6 in the Spring Game?***

The politics of coach-speak is the key here

Aug 7, 2013, 3:14 PM

You're dealing with what appears to be a player with a tendency to arrogance and "me first". Having been a coach, I understand this. The way you deal with this kind of player - who is usually very talented - is you have to humble him early, and keep him working and guessing and stressing. He is better off working from behind on the depth chart as you go thru early and mid-phase of practice. The coach here is holding his cards and cutting him down a little, and will play them (and him) at the right time. It's too early to worry about such things. My guess is, as games wear on, and injuries mount in small increments, this guy will be on the field plenty.

Re: Kellen Jones

Aug 7, 2013, 3:25 PM

So you trust the coaches' opinions when they are handing out praise to the kid, but not in their judgement that he is not as qualified as Steward, Shuey, or Anthony??? That doesn't make sense...

Also how can you have trust in someone who you have never even seen play?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can we please put him at SAM

Aug 7, 2013, 4:41 PM

Why in the world are we starting Quandon when we have Kellen Jones and Steward just twiddling their thumbs... Seriously.

I would have Shuey in the middle, Jones/Tony at Will, and Anthony at SAM with Quandon giving moral support from the sideline.
