Yes I know it's Larry's now. There obviously hasn't been much turnover in my time.
I also replied in the wrong place because it's after 4:00 and still only Tuesday. Forgive me

as Goldenwoods Bar. But I would have been working for his wife, and that was NEVER gonna work. She had abut as much experience running a bar as my dog. Actually, maybe less. At least my dog knows how to deal with drunks.

was right after they changed names from Genoa to The Skybox. There was a hidden "love room" right behind the side bar where things went on I didn't want to even know about. One of the highlights of my career was throwing Iker Iturbe out. Ended up quitting after getting a gun pulled on me one night.

Iturbe was a Eurotrash punk back then.
Aug 6, 2015, 2:40 PM
|
|
This was one of those awesome weekends when ATF was in town, and Iturbe kept trying to buy drinks for his 18 year old GF. Usually Scott was pretty preferential to athletes, but when he heard that Iturbe had been asked 3 times to cut it out, told us to "get him the eff outta there".
Iturbe didn't want to leave quietly so a hammerlock and a half nelson later and we had him down the stairs.
The gun incident was similar, without the the athlete angle. It was one of those 18+ nights and I was tossing a kid out for drinking without a wristband, when one of his friends sucker punched me in the back of the head. I managed to hang on to the kid being thrown out while hitting the puncher with my maglite (a bouncer's best friend) until another co-worker could grab that guy. We tossed them out and were at the bottom of the steps to make sure they didn't come back. They went to their car, got a gun, and came back and pointed it at us. Scott saw what happened and came outside with his gun, which sorta ended the standoff.
The next day I decided that probably wasn't worth $10/hour.

It's bugging the sheet out of me. It had maybe some kind of irishy name?

My first exposure to those southern delicacies: Hard boiled eggs and boiled peanuts at the bar. Talk about lighting your #### on fire......

this flyer was nabbed from there the night before the Stones played Death Valley in 1989. Imagine, actual live music in downtown Clemson. What an incredible show that night. Upper Deck was above where the recent Clemson Bookstore was (now abandoned/currently being rebuilt).
I remember Pennie Annie's. Next door was The Bookstore, later The Corporation. Corporation 93 (the Bingo Hall behind Ingles in Central) - saw Mother's Finest there a few times. What about Snake's (where Firehouse Subs is now)? College Station Pub (out on 123 next to the Winn Dixie, now it's a doctors office, I think). That was actually a pretty classy joint, as Clemson bars go.
These were all 1980's decade bars, joining TTT, Bollwinkles, Sloan Street, Nick's, and of course, The Esso Club.

It wasn't that long ago that you could still see where the arrow on the outside of the building had been painted over.

I guess it had something to do with the one in Myrtle Beach. Then it was about 4 or 5 other places, then Zack's again.
I remember Zoo nights, where it was $1 liquor drinks before 10. We'd get there about 9 and and buy $10 worth of drinks. That place used to attract all kinds of folks from Anderson, Seneca, and Easley.
A few years later I was there one night when a TV (remember big heavy TV's?) fell off a stand on some girls head and just about knocked her out.
Building is still there..been vacant for a looong time. I bet it looks nice inside.

Not sure it qualifies as a bar but my freshman year we didn't have a tv so we went out and grabbed a couple of dogs and a 6 pack and watched football on away weekends in their recliners.

Last time I was downtown took my dad to Nick's, changed so much I could not take it . I think Nick passed and Milton sold .
I wanted to show my father where I spent my "quality time " !

I bet it is the one you know. While he looked in bad shape, he wasn't born in '24 bad.

1988 in front of like 6 people. We were flabbergasted at how good it was. Next show there were 400 people at what I think may have been The Zoo back then
