I've heard that D RAD left because of....
Dec 9, 2021, 5:57 PM
|
|
....lack of money coming in to cover the expenses.
Now don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger, however, it does make sense.
Dabo has either been the highest-paid or is in the top 5 paid coaches every year for the last 5 years (obviously, that changes with LR, BK, etc).
BV and TE are the highest-paid Assistants at + $4.3 mil combined.
We've built facilities with the best of them, spending as much or more $.
Now, from the revenue side, we are losing about $12 mil annually to the SEC schools and about $20 mil annually from the B10 schools just from the league payout, which will grow once TX and OK move into the SEC. In addition, we are not even in the top 25 schools from a total revenue base (ACC $, donations, ticket sales, etc).
On top of that, our school is relatively small (which I love) and public so we don't have as big of an alumni base as say Ohio St where they have about 50,000 more students than us as we speak. In the past, they have been about 30,000 to 40,000 more students than us. More students equal more alumni, more alumni equal more donations. Private schools get the best of both worlds from a revenue standpoint but rarely succeed in football unless there are huge outside donations (legal or illegal), like Vandy, Duke, Miami, Stanford, etc.
So, if you don't have the revenue like the big boys but you spend like the big boys, it would make sense there is an issue here. Thus, D RAD goes to a private school where you have a rich alumni base to fuel his spending habits. Plus, cutting salaries from BV and possibly TE help dramatically on a long-term contract.

One last thing, yes I have a source....doesn't everyone. Time will tell if mine is correct or not so don't skewer me for putting this out there. Based on what I've been told and what has been reported, it does make sense from a business standpoint. I don't like it but if it is factual I do realize that there isn't one thing I can do to change it as I give everything I possibly can to fuel the winning tradition that is Clemson Football.

So let me understand what you’re saying, under his watch Clemson has spent irresponsibly and he’s bailing because it’s caving in on him and he’s getting more money for his efforts. Excuse me if I say BS

Was it the same source who told you he played at K State When he actually played at Indiana university of Pennsylvania. You’ll forgive us for not trusting your anonymous source that is saying something no one else reputable has reported.
He got his masters at Miami and met his wife there. He’s 63 and some of the reports I’ve heard are that he is looking at the long play and wants to retire in Miami. Also there’s the more than double raise he’s getting that puts him far above the market price for an AD.

My apologies, I was talking BV
D Rad actually graduated from IUP-Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He got his master's from UM which everyone considers their Alma Mater as your undergraduate school.
Either way...nobody is going back to their alma mater, that isn't the reason.

Yes, this to me is the most compelling from a business standpoint.
Coaches' salaries went up 400 basis points in one year...ouch.

Maybe but I'm not buying that

He left bc there isn't enough money to cover the money he already spent...if that's the case he's just running from a mess her created.
Also, he's worried about money and is going to Miami...smaller enrollment, same endowment and a fraction of the support from actual sports revenue. Maybe he'll secure major boosters but thats not the place you run to to avoid money problems
It's just a great situation for him, it's where he went to grad school, and he's making 3 times as much there.
I'm not buying some underlying cause here.

That's great until you mentioned budgets and the State of South Carolina. Nothing like a government budget where you can blow and it and generate revenue via taxes. In a business, if you spend more than you make, you go bankrupt.
Sorry, but I'm just not overly impressed with a government budget guy.

Tell me if I’m wrong but didn’t he go to a school in the same conference that probably just paid a big payout to their old coach and a pretty penny for their new coach? Plus their football stadium is 40 minutes away. He just wants to be the one to build a new stadium at Miami. Your argument holds no water.

I read that athletic revenues nearly doubled during his time at Clemson
Dec 9, 2021, 6:54 PM

From ~$69M to ~$139M.
Clemson’s athletic cash flow is sound.
Yes, the SEC’s TV contract is going to give them a significant revenue advantage. That is a fact.
Yes, Miami is looking to spend big in athletics.
The fact Clemson is competing at the same level as ND, Bama, Ohio State, etc. (big revenue and big endowment) is truly remarkable. Enjoy this ride, it will not last forever.

Look, WJ.
Clemson is a small town. Yes, the University is pretty big, but the town is small. Greenville and Anderson are both small cities. DRad has spent most of his life in bigger cities. He's entering his mid-60s. He may have wanted an opportunity to live in a city (with all the amenities of such) and, to tell the truth, he'd accomplished what he'd been brought to Clemson to do. Retirement is only about 6-8 years away.
It was time to move on. And, since NONE of us know what his family dynamics are, let's not eliminate the possibility that there were members of his family who were ready to move on.
If you look around the country, 10 years is about what you get from an AD. They come in, do what they do, and leave. Sometimes, they leave earlier if they've alienated enough people, had a personality conflict within the department or the leadership team, or just get a better offer. Let's not act like this is a problem. It's just normal.
