Why? I can't see article, gives me a signup window, but why woukd Franklin give up $49mil for $9mil?? I would take the additional $40m and just not work for a year. Get a gig for $7-8mil a yr later and just watch that $49m accumulate interest.

Whatever his contract with VT would have minus that buy out sum.
Now he gets the 9m plus the contract with VT.

I think in a lot of these contracts the buyout gets spread over a long period (more than 10 years), and some coaches will take a lump-sum to move on.

The buyouts are paid over time (6 years in this case)

and i believe that as soon as he takes a new job the offset clause kicks in and the value of his new contract is deducted from the remaining buyout.

This could mean his new contract with VT is worth around $40mil.

Most of these clauses also require the coach to actively seek new employment though im not sure how thats actually enforced.

Jimbo Fischers massive buyout notably included no offset clause. A&M was on the hook for that no matter what Jimbo did.

To take $9m instead of not working and get $49m does seem crazy, but Franklin said up front he wanted to get back into coaching. So my thought is he just really loves coaching and he will make big dollars at VT to make up for it.

not sure of the actual legal term but many of these contract buyouts have stipulations that the coach is required to perform a reasonable search for further employment

How much money does anyone need?

Aside from ego, if someone gives you 10 million vs 50 million, is it going to make any difference in your life?

Once you have $9M you still want to work, especially as a coach because you like coaching. The money is a bonus. The work is more fun.
