It's Time Everyone Quit The Pretending

The college umps, refs, and officials in the major conferences are not incompetent. If they were, that issue could be addressed. They are corrupt and crooked. That issue can't and won't be addressed. So, everyone will just go on pretending that there are no corrupt officials, just incompetent ones. And chit like what happened to our team on Sunday will continue to happen. No one is going to address it because it would expose too many corrupt officials and scandals. Too many teams who have been screwed would sue the NCAA into bankruptcy.

There is absolutely no way that there are not corrupt officials in college sports. Why do we never hear about any of them being charged? Why does the NCAA bend over backwards to protect and shield them?

I'm not defending the umps, but all college referees (pro too I think) are just side gigs. They have regular full time jobs. Some if not all have some bias and aren't perfect and fight with their wives too. To call them corrupt is a bit much.

Officials in the NFL, NBA, and MLB all make significant salaries that are especially lucrative considering that is essentially seasonal work. College baseball officials are poorly compensated and it shows. If you work 5 games a week during the regular season, you’d pull in about $1000 a week or $16k for a season. It would be terribly inconvenient, if not impossible, for someone with a serious occupation. So it does not attract the best of the best. It may attract a few super ambitious folks intent on moving into officiating in a professional league. But they will move on quickly. And, of course, people working under this kind of circumstance would be especially vulnerable to financial inducement. I’m not even bringing this up in reaction to our series. It’s incredibly naive to have a billion dollar industry, that has an adjunct billion dollar gambling industry (an industry whose primary media partner is directly and indirectly involved in said gambling), and have essentially a network of amateur officials. Paying grown men $200 to officiate a game broadcast on ESPN is ridiculous.

MLB umps miss ball/strike calls 29% of the time in 2 strike counts! How bad must NCAA umps be if the paid professionals are that bad? Bring on the robot umps!!

This...

Playing ball in Charleston growing up we had an umpire who worked for the city as a mechanic...Umpired in the evening calling high school and legion games...then he'd call citadel and CofC games on the weekends...and he would fill in for when they needed umps for the Riverdogs...

Reminds me of that line: “Never bet on anything that can talk”.

I imagine they gamble on college baseball games, especially ones that they referee

Given how many sports players and coaches that have already been caught

Not sure if it is still the case but..

There was a time when the officials for the Final Four were not made known until game time to prevent them from being “influenced”
