Thoughts on upcoming playoff expansion..

Sep 2, 2022, 9:27 PM

Name a team and season where the #12 team in the country would have a realistic chance at not only beating the #1 team, but also running the table after that. Keep in mind, at the end of the season when injuries have piled up and only the heavyweights have enough depth to keep winning.

There's not that much parity in college football. Especially not over the last decade. Since there have been only 4 teams, the #4 usually gets blown out and #1,#2, and occasionally #3 are on a different level.

Just like the basketball tournament. There's only been one 16 seed beat a 1 seed in all of the years they've played. Did they win it all? Nope. What does the NCAA do? Expand the bracket. LOL.

Oh well. Not up to me.

#1 does not play #12 unless #12 beats #5. Any team can beat any other team.

That really doesn't help in my opinion

Recognizing the likelihood that #12 is playing with less depth than #1 and

a) #12 plays out of their minds

b) #12's coaches come up with a great game plan for #5

c) #12 wins the first round - easily or otherwise

How much more likely is it that #1 pulverizes #12 after enjoying a healing bye week while they scout the first round teams?

We’ll see that scenario over and over. #12 or #5 could realistically pull off an upset of #1, but I think it will never happen when 1 gets a bi-week to watch them play a win or go home game against a top team.
A bi-game in basketball is a good reward, but it don’t insure victory. In football it will.

said earlier..the first round shoudl be competitive

but once those 5-12 seeds start playing the 1-4 seeds in the second round its going to be blow out city

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It’s not about those last 4 teams

Sep 2, 2022, 10:37 PM

It’s about the first 4 that get a bye. College football is addicted to voting on who’s champion. So rather than putting in 8 and letting them all play for it, they want to vote in 12 so they can pass out byes to extend their control of outcomes.

It waters it down more and makes it costly for even more travel for the winning teams d***

You're looking at the bracket wrong! #12 seed could not possibly

Sep 2, 2022, 11:33 PM

play the #1 seed before the third round. They would have to beat the #5 seed in the first round, then would play the #4 seed in the 2nd round....then they would have a shot at the #1 seed.

I agree...it would be a very long shot for a #12 to ever meet the #1 seed!

Instead of looking at it as in #12 can't beat #1 I think it's better to think as #5-8 get an extra home game against a ranked opponent and win or lose you get a bowl game too. I'm the #8 team I'm not thinking my team can win it all but hey I might get a team I normally wouldn't play at home. Possibly a Florida or a Washington or a UCLA. Who knows. Could be exciting could be boring but lets give it a chance
