Anyone else surprised to see DJ howard in the game?

Sep 3, 2013, 10:36 AM

I was.

Didn't Howard catch TD pass in UGa game?! BIG!

Sep 3, 2013, 10:38 AM

Brooks caught the TD

Sep 3, 2013, 10:41 AM

Howard had 4 carries for 5 yards

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope

Sep 3, 2013, 10:39 AM

If players have earned their way onto the field, we will put them in the game. Howard has put in the work and will have a role on our team.

No.

Sep 3, 2013, 10:40 AM

DJ Howard has really shown some flashes at times, and quite frankly I was surprised he didn't have more success. I really like to watch him run - he can move.

Re: Our RBs

Sep 3, 2013, 10:46 AM

I feel really good about our RB situation after watching that performance on Sat night. Hot Rod and Brooks looked great.

Wonder if we'll see Dye this weekend?

Sep 3, 2013, 10:44 AM

Even if he doesn't play this weekend, he'll be on the field before long. We need a bigger back in the rotation.

Not sure that Howard is the answer.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I really doubt it, based on the way Dabo and Morris

Sep 3, 2013, 11:00 AM

have been talking. They made it sound like they were very comfortable with McDowell, Brooks, Davidson, and Howard, and that while Dye could be called upon if and when he's healthy and he's needed, the plan at this stage is to redshirt him. They did leave the possibility open, however.

I'm not putting a lot of stock into what they are saying

Sep 3, 2013, 11:14 AM

about the situation at this point. Howard hasn't shown anything since the Auburn game his freshman year and Davidson is too small. Hot Rod still gets rag dolled on occasion and you worry about his durability over a long season. Boyd is still our short yardage back and I doubt they want him to be that through 13 or 14 games.

The way our schedule sets up, we don't play our fourth game until a month from now. We have time to get true freshmen up to speed during the month of September before a decision must be made.

I guess we have the answer now. Dabo says Dye is out for at

Sep 3, 2013, 11:37 AM

Least four more weeks and will redshirt unless there is a disaster. Again, I really think they are comfortable with the rbs they have.

It's funny. I get the exact opposite impression from their

comments. They don't seem totally happy with what they have. They seemed to fall in love with Dye at the first part of fall practice and were encouraged he would contribute this year. Then the back injury.

They seem to be giving Gallman a lot of love the last few weeks, but not sure if that is a motivational tool and that he's shown enough to get time this year.

I think they were very excited by what Dye showed

early on, and he definitely would have played barring the injury. While I think they were very disappointed to lose him, I think they were pleasantly surprised and encouraged by the performance of both Brooks and Davidson, resulting in the comfortable feeling of which we speak. I think McDowell was always gonna be #1.

Not at all

Sep 3, 2013, 10:50 AM

Hot Rod does need to be spelled every now and then. What surprised me more was how ineffective he was. Seems like he ran straight up the middle each time and got stuffed each time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who are you are you talking about? Surely not Hot Rod...

Sep 3, 2013, 10:57 AM

I was more referring to how much they referenced Howard being injured... not even making the 3-deep.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're right - that was the impression they gave.***

Sorry to confuse

No, I meant Howard being ineffective. Hot Rod was nothing short of awesome.

Re: Anyone else surprised to see DJ howard in the game?

Sep 3, 2013, 11:02 AM

I was. Outside of Auburn 2011, he hasn't been all that impressive in any game.

He doesn't have near the talent of McDowell or Brooks and I don't think he should've been in a game of this magnitude.

Re: Anyone else surprised to see DJ howard in the game?

Sep 3, 2013, 11:18 AM

Yes. I was even more surprised that they kept putting him back in the game when he was getting no yards.

I figured Brooks should had gotten those carries.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, but I like McDowell and Brooks MUCH better. DJ seems

Sep 3, 2013, 11:41 AM

to run really upright and never goes forward once hit.

I agree. He seems to run like a small back even though he's carrying close to 220 lbs. Hopefully the light comes on for him but right now he is a distant 3rd on the depth chart, I would think.

Sep 3, 2013, 1:02 PM

CJ didn't get any touches did he? Yes, I was suprised by seeing Howard. He brought absolutely nothing to the running game. I felt bad for him. I just don't think he has "it" like other RBs. I wouls like to see Gallman run the ball some against SC State. Or maybe they need to run Hot Rod the first quarter or 2 and then give Howard the majority of carries in the 2nd half to see what he can do. It could be a confidence builder that he needs.
