Free speech in the US does not include foreigners who express opinions about American political matters. In other words, free speech is not a right for foreigners in the US.
If you don’t like it, then try some other place other than Germany or France to find a free speech for foreigners country to visit. They don’t tolerate foreigners interjecting themselves in German or French politics.

Did you miss the part about him being an American citizen? Not a green card, or an H1B, or a work permit, or pending asylum, or refugee...American CITIZEN. And never mind the fact that Constitutional rights apply to everybody on US soil, citizen or not, INCLUDING free speech.

The 1st amendment limits Congress' power and it makes absolutely no distinction on the power over one group or another. The Bill of Rights applies to all persons in the country, except where specifically referring to citizens (e.g. voting in the 15th Amendment).
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
I suspect what you've confused is the Government's ability to deport a legal resident (non-citizen) for violating immigration laws based on certain political affiliations. It's the difference between regurgitating something you've heard someone else regurgitate versus actually having an understanding of an issue.

My wife and I travel out of the country with a couple every year for a vacation, and the husband is a man with... government connections... and often gets wind of things before others do. I'll leave it at that. This year, he's insisted we stay in the U.S. because he was concerned we wouldn't be able to get back in. I thought he was overreacting...

I don't know anything about this guy. He could be an absolute lying POS for all I know. But RLowTD and Next approached as if he wasn't and he deserved what happened, and that's the biggest issue. If the man ISN'T lying, the fact that the MAGA faction looks at it and says, "Well, good," shows a huge problem and emphasizes how they have succumbed to authoritarianism.
And for those questioning the honesty of what he said, I wish the same skepticism were applied when Trump or this admin feeds y'all lines of bull ####.
