That explains a lot.

Btw, that is not life preparation. Production is what employers care about, not effort.

Seems to be the mentality of the team

Adam Randall making the case that a 5-5 season is better than a 10-0 on the radio right now. Because of character development

Dabo is an employee and Neff is his boss.

Development may be one of Neff's requirements.

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

that's what the fallback meaning of Best is the standard to begin with.......

Some of you are so blind, you'll never find an acorn. "Max effort" means what it means--giving your all. Go Tigers!!!

You’re not serious, are you?

The coach is telling the boys exactly what they need to hear right now. First half of season we saw little to no effort out of most of the team. Coach is trying to save the locker room and finish the season without a complete disaster.

That has always been the meaning of best is standard. Spoiled fans are the only ones who interpret it differently.

No, there is a huge difference in meaning between "best is standard" and "max effort". Max effort maintains that not being the best is okay so long as you tried really hard. It's a standard that has failure (not being the best) as an acceptable mental attitude and outcome.

Best is standard says "I don't care how hard you are trying. You need to figure out how to be the best because trying really hard is not the standard. Being the best at what you do is the standard."

No the other poster is correct. It was explained by Dabo way back at the very beginning what that means, and yes the other poster is correct, fans just added their own meaning to it.

Coach can nuance and float the meaning all he wants and he'll be right. He runs the show for sure. He'll change alot of things in the coming weeks to put gold and glitter on a turd. I'm just saying "best" does not mean try hard. It means that when you take measurement of any qualitative or quantitative attributes, the object of the measurment is at the top of or decidedly mixed in with all of the top in the group. Let's say best is rated in the top 10 in performance..how many of our guys putting in their maximum efforts get that high?

Who are the Best quarterbacks of 2025?
Who are the best linebackers?
Who the the best corners and safeties?
Who are the best OL?
Who are the best recievers and tightends?
Who are the best DL?
Who are the best running backs
Who are the best kickers?
Who are the BEST TEAMS?...All the teams try hard. All of them say they are giving their max efforts How is that standard working for them?

So on another tact if best is standard...who by numbers is the best QB this year? Just using QBR you would say Jayden Maiava...ranked number 1 in QBR.....Max Effort Cade Klubnic is ranked 58. So using best is standard...Klubnic needs to match or exceed the Maiava or one the the next 9 guys on that short list every week...that is best is standard. Not the bs just try your hardest crap. Set a goal.
Word's mean things...Just Sayin'

Best is the standard is one of Dabo’s team mantras. He gets to decide the meaning for that use. And he has been clear that it means to be the very best that you can be. Spin it all you want, but in this case, that is the meaning.

Are you trying to be intentionally incorrect?

Best is the Standard has been explained many many times over the years, by CDS himself.

THe slogan references being YOUR best you can be at everything you do. Practice, gameday, film study, classes, grades, community service, supporting others. Its impossible to be YOUR best without giving maximum effort in everything.

The cadre of wilinfully ignorant try to spin it into something its not nor ever meant to be and will also spin "maximum effort" into trophies for everyone, orange slices and Hi-C afters practices

People that want to cheer max effort really just need to stick to watching soccer. All that game is people running back and forth displaying max effort.

With that said, I think we're getting some of the guys best effort but it's not translating to their highest level of production. There's just a disconnect there.

All the players can do is their best, ie max effort.

It's like Dabo said, if they still lack the talent at "max effort" to compete at a high-level, then it's on the coaches.

I agree 100% with Dabo. 5-5 is on the coaches, NOT the players.

Tigers have been favored in all ten games and are 5-5. Uncertain where the "max effort" has been expended, with some notable exceptions including Adam Randall, Sammy Brown and Nolan Hauser. Thanks to these Tigers.
