It may come down to Clemson or Cincinnati for the last play off spot

Sep 7, 2021, 9:56 PM

I think Clemson goes 11-1 in the regular season and then wins the ACC TItle game. It is quite possible that Cincinnati goes undefeated.

If Georgia goes 11-1 in the regular season and loses to Alabama in the SECCG then only Alabama goes to the play offs from the SEC.

Could be a scenario where Alabama, Ohio State, and Oklahoma are all in.

It could come down to a 12-1 ACC Champion Clemson and an undefeated Cincinnati for the 4th play off spot.

Good game Saturday night. Could have gone either way.

All these "what-ifs" after the 1st week are rather pointless

don't you think??

You can count on this...any P5 team going undefeated is in the playoff.

If Cincinnati goes undefeated, they are probably in, since there are unlikely to be four undefeated P5 teams, and they are starting out ranked way higher than a non-P5 team ever has.

You can also count on the SEC runner-up getting in, if they lose fairly close in the SEC CG for their only loss. Since it is very unlikely to have four undefeated teams amongst the P5 champs and Cincinnati.

I think UC is going to lose to ND -probably drop another one

ND will lose to someone else along the way also. People are forgetting how rare it is that teams go undefeated.

There are several scenarios that can work for or against Clemson. Problem is Clemson is currently not in the drivers seat.
So lets say Ohio State ,Oklahoma, and Alabama are in and that Clemson does go undefeated and wins the ACC at 12-1.
What happens if Georgia goes 11-1 ,Alabama 12-0 in ( in the regular season) and Georgia wins the SECCG on a last minute field goal?
And what happens if Notre Dame ends up with only one loss to a ranked opponent?
And you did not even mention the Pac-12 champion. Wonder if that team has only 1 loss?
And if they do go undefeated do you think the committee would keep Cincinnati out, especially with Clemson's remaining schedule looking rather pathetic based on the sorry performance by the league overall this past weekend.
No, the game Saturday night was not a good game, and never at any time did I see Clemson coming out on top.
As of now, they can't afford another "good game " like we saw Saturday night or there won't be a playoff spot.

For the life of me I still do not understand why each year we talk about playoff scenarios after one week of college football!

Because we are a spoiled fanbase , and only a handful of schools can realistically talk about playoffs after one week of the season .

Why do we wait on the season only to worry about

who makes the playoffs 15 weeks away. Let the season play out.
Enjoy the journey!

I totally agree ,but this year could be that "one exception to the rule. "Right now we are hanging on a thread and it won't take but one slip up for that thread to pop.

this is true, but it's also true that if we'd beaten Georgia 10-3 and then slipped up against Georgia Tech, we'd be pretty much in the same boat as we are now, probably even worse. We have to remember that the year we lost to Pittsburgh(?), the only reason we made the playoffs is because something like 6 of 7 teams at the top also managed to lose that week or the week after.

If Cincinnati wins out they are getting in over the ACC. There was way to much controversey last year about being screwed over by the playoff committee. That won't happen this time if it become a choice between the Bearcats and the ACC. I don't think this is going to happen anyway with Dabo's OL being so bad, they will lose another game or two.

Congrats to your UGA team. The defense was just too much for Clemson. Hope we can get a rematch in the playoffs maybe!

"either way" is a valid point but from this side it sure didnt feel like it. I think part of it was getting nothing out of the ground game

Fun Cincinatti stat - They held Georgia to 45 yards rushing

Sep 8, 2021, 10:23 AM

in the 3 point loss in the bowl game January 1 of this year....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm sure UGA prepared for that like they did the Clemson

Sep 8, 2021, 11:40 AM

game... sigh

diff year, diff teams also

and it's early, lot of football and dynamics that will change things throughout the course of the season
