Is SC high school basketball that bad?

Feb 12, 2013, 11:26 AM

I have no idea but noticed the following in the RPI out of 347 teams:

346 South Carolina State
344 Furman
342 PC
330 The Citadel

The 2 big schools are SCAR at 206 & Clemson at 151

My question is whether or not SC high school talent is a huge contributing factor the lack of success of all the state's basketball teams?

Might be better is this wasn't such a football state.

Feb 12, 2013, 11:36 AM

But, there is nothing wrong with that. Most of us prefer football over basketball.

We're friends. You laugh, I laugh. You cry, I cry. You jump off a bridge, I get in my boat and save your retarded a$$.

It appears so

Great question.

Football is obviously king. Baseball and soccer seem to be vulturing a lot of athletes, too.

Basketball has been down for almost a decade with few exceptions. The next 3-4 years there are some highly ranked players, PJ Dozier, LJ Peak, Seventh Woods to name a few.Woods and Dozier will probably be rated in the top ten. All of these are guards not much that I know of as far as size coming up.

Rated in the top ten of what and by whom?***

If there is a good player in SC then NC gets him. The last big recruit to stay instate was Milton Jennings & maybe NC didn't want him

it's not an area of focus....but more than that

Feb 12, 2013, 11:55 AM

just like the state of GA most good players leave the state...they see SC and Clemson aren't committed to basketball....most players in the state of GA leave for Kentucky, Florida, NC, Duke, etc. They don't even consider GT or GA.

To further compound the problem....

Feb 12, 2013, 1:48 PM

those states do not have stong AAU programs. As I am sure you know, it is through the AAU program and not high school where most of the players aspiring to play collegiately get recruited.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

the AAU program here in Atlanta is very strong

Feb 12, 2013, 5:54 PM

look at the Atlanta Celtics team...had Josh Smith (ATL Hawks) and Dwight Howard (Lakers) on it. As you say most high school kids who are stronger players are showcasing their talent on all star teams...not their local high school teams.

275. Awwww yeah. Not as bad as SC State, Furman, PC, or Citadel. GET SOME.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes

Feb 12, 2013, 1:28 PM

Horrible coaching, apathy, and non existent player development rule the day in South Carolina. There is talent, but many A.D.'s take the rest of the year off after football season. South Carolina could be a decent basketball state, but there is little motivation, which is strange because basketball can be low cost, high reward type of sport.

I can only imagine what Brad thinks when he goes to a SC

I cannot think of one larger high school in SC where a football coach also coaches basketball.

Of the South Carolina Mr Basketball winners

Feb 12, 2013, 2:00 PM

since 1990, only 3 have been drafted to the NBA.

Those 3 players were:

Ray Allen- went to UCONN
Jermaine O'Neal- Went straight to the NBA
Raymond Felton- Went to UNC

Kevin Garnett likely would've won the award had he not transferred out of state before graduating high school.

So yes, SC high school basketball sucks, and when great players do come out of our state, they choose to go to school elsewhere.

Additionally, South Carolina has had 10 Mr. Basketball winners sign with them since 1990, while Milton Jennings is the only winner of the award to sign with Clemson.

Has anyone seen Newberry play? Newberry has a player Jalin Alexander that I would love to see at Clemson but he is getting no love because he plays at Newberry

What club team does he play for

If you don't play club nowadays, you're nobody

Feb 12, 2013, 5:00 PM

really any other school in the state to a high standard when the basketball talent just either isn't produced or properly developed? On top of that because of the lack of success & committment from the schools that when a talented player does come along he goes out of state.

Sounds like the investment needs to be made from the college level down to AAU.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A big part of the problem I have seen

Feb 12, 2013, 5:15 PM

and not just in basketball, is the fact that kids are starting to concentrate on one sport at earlier and earlier ages these days. It used to be that typically the best players on the football team were also the best on the basketball, track, and baseball teams as well. I have begun to see a lot of kids who dedicate themselves to one sport, especially when it comes to baseball and basketball. One of my youngest son's best friends is a phenomenal athlete....simply the star at whatever sport you put him out thee for. This past summer he decided that he was going to concentrate solely on baseball. Between school ball and travel ball he is pretty much on the field playing baseball 11 months out of the year, and is either practicing with his team or in private instruction 12 months out of the year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

there definitely is a move to specialize in sports now

Feb 12, 2013, 5:58 PM

and it's over the top...every dad in the ATL area thinks his son is the next Chipper Jones and if we only go to the cage 5 days a week it's going to happen. Over the top.

AAU is the worst thing to ever hit the sport. If you football recruiting is bad. It's nothing compare to the cheating that goes on in bb. Thanks to aau crap

I don't think Brownell cares for what goes on in AAU ball. Too many shady characters and hangers on who are out to get something out of a deal. At least that's what I've heard !!
