With PJ taking GT down the flexbone rabbit hole

Talent wise, when a new coach replaces this high school offense, what offense could he successfully run his 1st few years? Its obviously going to be a difficult transition, the only thing I could think of is a spread run game like Auburn or Oregon. Outside of that, they are screwed.

Their roster will be QBs that cant pass, WRs that cant catch, OL that cant pass block, do they even have tight ends?

You were correct until this year...

I don't think you've watched us much. Thomas can throw. Smelter can catch. Our RB's can run, and our OL can actually block this year.

If a new coach brings in a scheme that doesn't rely on the cut block how good will they be?

makes it sound as if our guys (all of them, qb, wr's, ol) can't do anything related to passing. And this year, that's not true.
And more than ever, offense is QB-driven, regardless of the scheme. If CPJ leaves, and we have a QB like Justin Thomas, we'll be fine. If he leaves, and we have a guy like Tevin Washington or Vad Lee, we're toast.

It would be tough to say you're not right . I participated in the 1986 SC State championship game against JF Byrnes HS ...and we lost badly. Think we were favored by a TD . Mike Dingle (of Coot lore) was our RB and he was shut down . It was a cold , rainy night at the Roach.

We run the spread like most other colleges

Id hardly call our offense high schoolish. On the other hand, outside of the military schools and GT, no one else runs the flexbone... and even the Military schools are adding some spread elements.

I think variety is what makes football interesting. If everyone ran the same Offense, College football would be boring. Johnson technically runs a spread offense in many of his formations. I

When the bone is clicking with a quarterback who can make proper reads its a beautiful thing to watch. I just like watching dive, counters, read options etc. Much more than bubble screens!

GT has as much talent as they ever have, which is an average amount. Not great, but definitely competitive. Both starting WRs are likely NFL players, and Justin Thomas is an elite athlete at the college level, albeit not an NFL QB. There are a few other good players sprinkled amongst a bunch of role players as well.
If you don't believe me, go look at recruiting rankings for every year since they've been recorded. GT has never been anything more than average in terms of recruiting because of their academic limitations. They just have a really good coaching that allows them to play above their talent level.

An interesting question...
Nov 14, 2014, 8:52 PM
|
|
Based on where college football has headed over the last 6 or 7 years, I think the next coach will run a spread with more passing than we currently do.
Having said that, our offense right now is very good. I can't say for sure how we'll do tomorrow. But we have a very talented QB (he was offered DB by Alabama), some experienced running backs, and some NFL-talent-level WR's.
Our biggest talent deficit, as usual, is on the defensive side of the ball. But I like what Ted Roof is doing over there. He just needs a few years of decent talent to recruit.
Short-term, with Justin Thomas running our offense, we're going to score a lot on most teams we play. Don't know if our defense can hold up its end of the bargain.
