Is Erik Backich a home run hire?

Jun 14, 2022, 3:45 PM

Well I do think he’s a solid hire. And I support this hire if he’s indeed the guy. But what he’s capable of doing at Clemson? It’s a gamble because it’s a unknown. We assume because he’s done decent up In Michigan he can have national championship type success at Clemson.

I don’t think he is a home run hire. The Big 10 is not an elite baseball conference and he has not dominated it.

He is not.

It's a shame that all we can do is go after the current "hot name" instead of a proven coach over a longer time.

I wish we would go after a coach in the South who already knows the coaches and recruiting areas and we may well be doing that.

No, and add to the fact that we are prepared to pay him $1 million and it is a stupid hire and a waste of money. To pay that kinda money, you need to hire a proven winner from an established baseball program.

Looking at his record closely, it looks like a stupid hire.***

When the expectations were set as high as the AD set them for a program that is no longer what the AD thinks it is then I guess replacing a coach with a new coach with a worse record than the fired coach is a home run hire. Bring the excuses of how hard it is to win at MI I guess. Bakich is the only real option Neff has unless he wants to go internally or to Clemson alumni like B. Lecroy or D. Miller or someone like Scott Jackson from Liberty, all good options but Neff talked himself above and past them. Neff put himself in a no win situation. dan radakovich broke Clemson baseball.

Ask again in 4-5 years if he’s the one we hire.***

Its a dang good hire and an upgrade if...

we are just looking on paper. The guy played for a top notch college coach, spent a year here and then worked with maybe the best coach in college baseball right now for several years and then has spent time in the ACC and has done very well at Michigan. Its worth noting that the B10 just doesnt have a good RPI and gets few teams in...add to it that Michigan is stuck playing crappy midweek games that kill their RPI too. They have good seasons where they didnt make it bc of those reasons.

I'd be elated if he's the guy. Let him run with it and see what happens.

I think Bakich is very good. He turned around Maryland, took Michigan to their first CWS since 1984 and played in the final of it. He was tremendous as an assistant and recruiting coordinator in 6 years at Vandy. He's hired top notch assistants. There is a reason we are in a bidding war with Michigan, FSU, and USC for him right now. He is USC's #1 target and Michigan is trying very hard to keep him.
