My dad, a Clemson engineer (Master in ME, 1965) was a folk music fan back during those days. He played guitar and loved stuff like the Kingston Trio, Kweskin's Jug Band, etc. He had the soundtrack for the movie "Bonnie and Clyde", which was actually a group of songs recorded by Flatt & Scruggs in their earliest days. That album included the song Percy played to get Leonard outta there.
As a child I listened to my dad's vinyl, including that Flatt & Scruggs album. I fell in love with the sound of the banjo and eventually learned how to play it. By the time I reached high school I was teaching lessons in the music store where I took lessons. But banjo wasn't very cool... so I put it down and got my dad to buy me a Stratocaster kit guitar so I could learn some Aerosmith and AC/DC. That stuff wasn't any harder than what I had been playing on banjo, and girls seem to like it more. I moved on to Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, yada yada. I was in a band that did a little performing on College Ave. in the late '80s.
When I grew up I finally figured out that the banjo is just as cool as the guitar, and for me it's more honest. Most rock music is about chasing a fantasy; most bluegrass is about living in real life. That's my take on it.

Stratocaster,Buddy Holly and Don Rich. Got to see them at Va Beach while in the Navy. Actually it was Buck Owens and Don. Wish I could have been to a Buddy concert. I have seen the show, Buddy several times.

I've been playing banjo since I was a junior in high school ......... long time ago. When I was at Clemson Bob Isenhour, Tom Sprott, Ritchie Guerin, Fred Robbins and a few others had a band that played around campus. Bob was an excellent banjo player (from Salisbury, NC) but I could never get him to show me much on it.
