recruiting - numbers - disappearing players/oversigning

per rivals Georgia 2015 - 29 - 3.45 avg star 2016 - 21 - 3.71 2017 - 26 - 3.69 2018 - 24 - 4.08 so - 100 with limit of 85. this does not include the 2014 redshirts.
CLEMSON 2015 - 25 - 3.48 - avg star 2016 - 22 - 3.59 2017 - 14 - 3.86 2018 - 15 - 3.8 SO - 86 with 85 limit. again - before 2014 redshirts.
Alabama 2015 - 25 - 3.88 avg star 2016 - 24 - 3.83 2017 - 29 - 4.1 2018 - 18 - 3.83 so - 96 (11 over)
Gamechickens 2015 - 30 - 3.3 avg star 2016 - 27 - 3.04 2017 - 25 - 3.24 2018 - 23 - 3.26 so - 105 (20 over)
at a min - Ga oversigned 15, Clemson 1, Bama 11, Gamechickens 20.
possible causes 1. juniors going pro. possible. definately not in SC case. but this probably balances out on clemson, ga, bama with redshirts. 2. running players off - bama has history of this. 3. arrests and kicked out. not really a factor. GA, Bama, SC have more arrests - but seldom kick out. 4. in sc case - they may just want to get out - fast.
year after year - the numbers are clear. Clemson staff recruits and develops better quality men. Clemson keeps their players. SC clearly has not only a talent gap - but also a huge churn of players. Bama, Ga and Clemson are fairly equal in talent - but Ga and Bama churn/dump players.
Note - teams still can recruit more players for 2018. these numbers can only get worse.
Have a great Christmas Tigers!

It says a lot about the stability of our program and the way we treat players.

Oversigning and running off players who were not evaluated or developed correctly is one of the things the SEC does to gain a competitive advantage. It’s wrong and I’m glad we don’t do it.

Also, Dabo likes to give scholarships to walk-ons

so no need to over sign even when you can be pretty sure someone will leave for some reason

Thanks for the research! This puts it about as clearly as it can be put-Clemson is recruiting, developing and turning out top notch athletes, while at the same time showing a strong level of commitment to these guys

some just decide not to play any further some have injuries that end their career etc -
would be interesting to see how many scholly's were awarded to walk-on players after enrollment - bet CU takes that department hands down.

How do early departures to the NFL figure into this?

I'm not saying there isn't a fox in the hen house but if some of the hens can fly then the Fox doesn't deserve all the credit.

Definitely interesting, but it's not nearly that simple

It's interesting to see the numbers broken down like this, and there's no denying that if all of our classes had 20+ guys then our recruiting rankings would be even higher. But just because a school happened to sign more than 85 players in a given four year period doesn't necessarily mean that they are oversigning.
There are many reason in addition to the few that you listed that lead to roster attrition from year to year. There are numerous cases where some recruits don't qualify and never end up enrolling at the school. This is one of the specific areas where Dabo and the staff do the best job. I'm sure you would find that the numbers start to change by at least a few players a year if you were to compare how many of the players in a given class actually end up on the following year's roster.
Nearly every program will lose at least one player in most years bc injuries cut their career short or they simply decide to give up football. That's before taking the number or yearly transfers into account.
Also, in the case of UGA and USC, each went through a coaching change with the one in Columbia being extremely messy. Anytime there is a turnover in the coaching staff, the number of players lost to attrition rises sharply.
