Interesting conversation between RGIII and Mark Jones...
Nov 1, 2021, 8:39 PM

|
during the closing seconds of the Clemson/FSU game.
Mark Jones: "What do you make of the body of work today by the quarterback (DJ)?"
RGIII: "It's been a mixture, right? Good and bad. I would honestly say it's been more bad than good. And you don't like that, you don't want to see that from Big Cinco. But, at the end of the day, he's been fighting through adversity all year. He hasn't been able to really live up to the expectations. But, he's never put his head down and he keeps going and keeps fighting every single day. When you talk about putting your head down, Will Shipley keeps putting his head down and keeps going, keeps going. I know this guy has got to be sore. There's no way that he's completely healthy. But, he's giving everything he possibly can for the team today. You see him catching balls on screens. You see him making runs and making guys miss, taking the hits and getting up, catching the ball when it's just a little bit behind him, and getting vertical, then going into the endzone and scoring touchdowns. He's carrying people. He's carrying his team right now. And, I don't think there's anybody on the team that's more happy for his success and what he's been doing today than DJ Uiagalelei because it's taken pressure off of him. And, some of the mistakes that he's made have been overshadowed by the performance of Will Shipley, 23 carries for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns."
Mark Jones: "Maybe that's part of the big picture from here on in for the Clemson Tigers...DJ, if he gets his team to win, in the final analysis, that's all that matters."
RGIII: "It really is all that matters. It's interesting because Dabo's such a prideful guy, would you say? And, he's kinda felt disrespected by the criticisms of his program, his coaches, his players. (It's part of the landscape.) And we definitely felt that in our meeting with him this week during the call. But, it's hard--it's hard to win games at any level of football: high school, college, or the pros. And, when national championship is the expectation, when you're 4-3 it feels like the sky is falling. And, for these faithful here--the Clemson Tiger fans--they don't want their program to go down the same route that other programs that were top programs went over the last couple of years. You look at Florida State, you look at LSU and some of these programs. But, these players are playing their hearts out out there. And we see it."
GAME COMMENTARY CONTINUES.
Mark Jones: "You had a good comment a moment ago about Clemson and their program. It's no secret that under Coach Swinney it's a very faith-based program, and part of that faith and belief there's an element of humility in there. And, it's all part of the grand equation sometimes, whether you like it or not."
RGIII: "That's very true. There's been a number of times in my career that someone's said something about me that I didn't like. You have to handle it with poise, confidence, and an appreciation for professionalism."

I think Mark Jones and RGIII are excellent. Most interesting pair I've heard this year. Just a very different sound, something fresh. Description, analysis, some metrics, human interest, and funny too. Wish more on air folks were like this.

Their qb, their running game, their defense, their coach building culture...He changed it around in 4th quarter when Tigers made their push, and played great D. Griffin is much more even - handed and does an excellent job with analysis, as he knows the game much better.

RG3 is my favorite announcer right now, dude calls it like it is and doesn’t hold back. Has plenty of comedy when he’s calling the plays.

IMO it was the best commentary analysis I’ve heard in a long time

Might be best ever. The quality and depth was impressive and RG3 knows very well about the pressures of being “the guy”. His career ended well before it really ever took off in NFL but his college days at Baylor were insane.
I like the pairing and hope our Tigers get them again this year ??

It is refreshing... And they're right. I'd say by and large posters on Tnet get a bad rap for discussing the state of the program. Voicing their concerns and offering their opinions. But at the end of the day, the concerns are valid and they love their school. It doesn't take long for a program to go from sugar to chit. And it's valid concerns.
We're getting beat (less uga) and squeaking by to less talented, really bad competition. Sure, other top programs have down years, lose 2 or 3 games, get upset by lower ranked teams but those teams still feast off bottom dwellers. This program needs a lot of scrutiny. If we were in the SEC, B1G, and even b12, it's a good probability we'd be 2-6 and would end the year with a losing record.

I like RGIII, even though he is still learning the trade. Mark Jones, I could do without. At times, he lapses into mumbling and I find it irritating. He didn't seem capable of pronouncing DJ's last name either.

I also noticed his mispronunciation of Uiagalelei throughout the game.

They are not my favorite commentators but RGIII nailed it when he said there are no layups for this Clemson offense. Everything is a 12 foot jump shot to use a basketball analogy. Nothing has been easy.
