In thinking about O Linemen,

Apr 11, 2022, 11:07 PM

I seem to recall under Bowden that we did “ok” with interior linemen, but often struggled with OT. Didn’t we frequently “grow a TE” into that role out of necessity?
Jump to today, and the ###### seems as though it’s flipped: We get OT’s much easier than IOL (When looking at their position during recruiting many of our linemen were OT’s). I know we supposedly like to cross train, but am I off in my recollection?

Even with a high talent like Mimms available, I’ve heard people say we don’t need another Tackle. Personally, I would love to have him, but that’s a whole different topic from my opening premise.

I remember Bowden and Rodriguez liked lighter linemen.

They felt that lighter linemen were better equipped for our fast style of play. It was a significant departure from the “bigger is better” philosophy of many other coaches (including the previous staff).

I remember some of our huge linemen recruited by West, such as the Carroll twins from Georgia, ended up leaving because they were not the type of linemen Bowden and RichRod utilized.

Good assessment, interesting.

We need some more big maulers on the line IMO. Caldwell valued recruiting technique over size the past few years, looks like Austin is valuing size (Thank God). Have always felt our line was much smaller than the typical SEC/Big10/Notre Dame lines. You can always teach technique but you can't teach size.

Would love to land Mims but I see him staying the SEC.

I agree that it is exciting.
Regarding Mims: The SEC has a rule that would require him to sit out a year if he transfers to another SEC school. I think this will push him outside of that conference.

Interesting, did not know that. Thanks. Heard Miami was a possibility with him, but I figured he would stay SEC.
