Why do so many players swing at pitches in the dirt ?? I could never hit a baseball, but love watching the Tigers, but I see so many batters ( all teams ) that will look at down the middle pitches and then swing at a pitch that hit s the ground ?? Just curious****

As a batter, you have less than a second to react to the pitch once it leaves pitcher's hand. About .60 of a second.

When you first see the ball, it is not in the dirt. By the time you finish your swing it is in the dirt. Low pitches are the hardest to hit.

makes sense to me ( I think**** ) -- it just looks like they would rather have one in the dirt, than a fast ball down the middle ??? -- sorta like the pitcher that throws 3 balls, then he put a soft strike down the middle thinking the batter won't swing ?? -- that's baseball I heard someone say***

The reason you change up your pitches is because of that short reaction time to a pitch. If a batter is expecting X pitch but gets Y pitch, he does not have enough time to react to what he was expecting but did not get.

Batting practice is all about getting your timing down. Practice makes that reaction time almost automatic.

I would pitch Mathes down every time. He bails backwards while he’s swinging so there’s no way he’s hitting anything that’s not belt high and on the inner third of the plate.
