Stats: Clemson vs Notre Dame—I like what I see here

In case anyone is curious, check out the stats I gathered below. I really like what I see here.

You will see total defense & offense, rankings and the YPG. If you see a number behind the YPG, it’s how that team did against Clemson or Notre Dame. For common opponents, you will see two numbers, the first one is against Clemson and then Notre Dame.

If you see an asterisk, it means that team (Clemson/Notre Dame) did worse than the opponent’s average. If you see a plus sign, it’s not worse, but it’s close to the average.

As you can see, Clemson played better opponents on both sides of the ball (just look at the opponents’ rankings). And we still end up as a better offense and a better defense.

Also, we normally did way better than the opponents’ average. Notre Dame? Not so much.

Clemson’s opponent only did better than their average only once—South Carolina’s offense. On the other hand, 3 Notre Dame’s opponents did better than their average on offense—Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt and USC—and 3 on defense—Pittsburgh, Vanderbilt and Ball State. So, what it means here is, for example, many other opponents of Ball State had better offensive yardage than Notre Dame had against Ball State!!!

Without Dungy as QB, it’s safe to say that Notre Dame has never played a top-20 offense, while we’ve played 3—#15 N.C. State, #17 Syracuse and #19 Texas A&M. Their best offense they’ve faced is Michigan, but South Carolina still has better offense than Michigan.

Note:
1. Clemson and Notre Dame played against Syracuse at home and both visited Wake Forest in Winston-Salem. Notre Dame played both Florida State and Pittsburgh at home, while Clemson played at Florida State and played Pittsburgh at a neutral site. We still did better even though we didn’t have home field advantage.
2. Syracuse played Clemson that the QB got knocked out of the game. Notre Dame played Syracuse that the QB got knocked out of the game.
3. From 2), it explains why Syracuse offense did better against us than Notre Dame. Other than that, we did better, even our offense without Trevor Lawrence did better than what Notre Dame did against Syracuse.
