In our D's defense...

Nov 19, 2012, 3:36 PM

lol - yeah - defense of the defense - sounds odd.

Anyway, I think a lot of our D's problems is that our O scores in a dang hurry. I mean - we chew up yardage and strike on almost any play. It's really awesome to watch, and amazing that CLEMSON fans have the opportunity to watch this stuff. It's NEVER been this good.

Well - all that quick-striking O means that the D is back on the field pretty quick sometimes. It's not like Bama's D that's been resting for the past 7 minutes of clock. No - it's very quick sometimes. We saw a hint of that last year when our D wore down quickly, and it's apparent this year too. So as long as our O continues to score so quickly, I think we can expect to see our D on the field more, which means that our opponents have more opportunities to score too. Maybe our D will catch up someday, but right now, our O is so far ahead it's frightening for any DC to come in here and try and catch them.

Bottom line: Our D will get better, and when it does, there's going to be some azz-kicking going on.

I see your point, but...

a quick scoring offense is not preventing your D from making a stop on 3rd an long. The D is as every bit as responsible for the amount of time they spend on the field.

yeah - but if you give their O 5 more possessions (instead of running a lot of clock), then they will score more. It's just simple math.

3rd and long...4th and long....TD. But, I agree in a way...

Saturday's night game turned in to a shoot out because both D's were running on and off the field more than they were running up and down it. :)

actually, it does. If the defense is already tired, then

they go out there and stop the other team for 2 plays, then they are still tired on third and long. Because the D is so tired, somebody blows an assignment and POP, first down.

My point was that they don't start off tired. Playing bad D

is every bit as responsible for elongating the amount of time on the field as the offense scoring fast. Even at that, the T.O.P. is pretty even in all of our games. In fact, in the NCST game we had a higher T.O.P:

NCST 26:42 vs CLEM 33:18
MD 31:57 vs CLEM 28:03
CLEM 26:53 vs DUKE 33:07
CLEM 31:02 vs WAKE 28:58

Blaming the offense is just an excuse for not making stops on defense.

Ok I'll bite. What is the excuse for giving up points on say the first 3 or 4 possessions of the game when they are not tired? Actuaaly our d gets better after halftime. We give a lot less points in the second half of games than the first. This does not support your argument. You go out there and get off the field quickly then you won't get tired. You give up a 16 play 90 yard drive for a TD and that is on the D.

Well, they better hurry.

Cause there are only two games left, including the bowl. And as for next year, who knows what the offense will look like with Chad, Tajh, and Nuke all on the bubble about leaving and Ellington definitely going.
