Totally disagree with Plyler on College Football Playoffs.

Having 8 teams in a playoff is pretty absurd. We're trying to find the BEST TEAM in college football. We're not trying to find the hottest team in a playoff setting. The regular season should mean something.
It's like when a wildcard team wins the Super Bowl. They weren't the best team in the NFL. If there was an 8 game playoff system and Clemson was undefeated, we would probably sit Tajh during the ACCCG or maybe against SCar because we'd have a lock into the playoffs.
4 teams are all you need. The 4 best teams. Leave it at that.

If you want an example of what a de-valued regular season looks like, look at college basketball. There's a reason nobody watches until March.

the critical problem is this
Apr 24, 2013, 8:41 AM
|
|
this is how it generally goes:
#1 Alabama loses a home game and drops to #2.
#1 Oregon (or inset any non-SEC team) loses an away game in overtime and drops out of the top 10.
The 4 "best" teams are the 4 most-promoted teams by the ESPN hype machine, not necessarily the 4 best. It's hard to truly determine who the 4 best teams are when most of the top teams only play 3 or 4 actual tough games in a season.

I have always thought 8 teams would be perfect. The 4 team

playoff was a step in the right direction but 8 teams gives you the same number in the college baseball world series. I think 16 is too many.

FCS has what 20 or 24?

The problem when you get to that point is telling the teams apart. There aren't many teams that can make an argument to be the #2 team in the country. There are more that can make the case to be the #4 team. And there are plenty that can make a case to be the 20th.
I say break it down to 64 teams. Have 8, 8 team "conferences" or divisions. Win your division and advance to a playoff. Its really the only objective way to do it.

shot at national championships with an 8 team playoff, right? All the hype for the SEC would be severely diminished, and everything would be decided on the field. College football is the only sport where perception even matters, and that's not a good thing for college football.
I do agree that we could be put in a situation where we would need to rest starters for South Carolina, but there's an easy solution to that: Move the game. I would suggest having an ACC game at the end of the year because usually it would matter.

The SEC stuff won't last forever. And even still with 8

teams, 5 or 6 would generally still be SEC in the current state of college football.
But everything is cyclical.

And you be the one first people calling for 8 teams if our Tigers were the 5th best team in the land. If we are the best team in the country or one of the best it really doesn't matter.

I like 8, but you make a good point about being undefeated in an 8 team playoff system. My concern about the 4 team playoff is that in a typical season the number 5 team could reasonably assert that they may be the best team in the country. I think a similar assertion by the number 9 team would be pretty unreasonable. Eight casts a wider net to get a team who may be very good but hasn’t played a top schedule – it gives them a chance to prove themselves. Nothing is perfect, but either scenario is better than the BCS we have had of late.
Of course, some of this discussion boils down to the definition of “best”. Do we mean best at the end of the year, or the aggregation over the entire season? Injuries, early season perceptions, competition and many other things affect the measurement of “best”.
