So.....it's done?

No SEC? No Big Ten? No new conference? Just the same old easy peasy boring ACC with a little hush money to boot?
Honestly I am not surprised. But it is a bit of a letdown.

Hush money if you earn it. The bottom feeders got what they wanted. They don't care if they make the CFP and the money they get now is not changing.

Far from done.

No huge announcement was going to happen at ACC meetings regarding losing members.

My guess is that in the near future one of the 2 main conferences (or both) will announce they are adding such and such schools from the ACC.

How they work that out behind the scenes I have no ****ing clue.

I'm still not willing to concede that this is legitimate.

Perhaps everyone is playing nice with the "increased revenue" storyline, and maybe it will even result in the potential for schools like Clemson to make a little more each year. But it doesn't address the problem, which is that a majority of ACC member institutions are losing tens of millions of dollars a year - and will continue to - because of the current TV contract.

If the powers that be at Clemson are truly okay with this, then they are doing our university and our athletic programs a huge disservice.

Perhaps lawyers have concluded that leaving the ACC isn't an option, and that it's not possible to dissolve the grant of rights. If so, and we've concluded 100% that we are stuck in the ACC until 2036, then this "increased revenue" helps some. But it certainly doesn't help much, and doesn't even make a dent in the relative financial hole we will still find ourselves in.

Perhaps we are at the mercy of the other conferences until they decide if they want to expand and who they want to invite. We aren't going anywhere without an invitation and then we have to figure out how to leave without it costing us too much.

The revenue sharing model that is being proposed is not sharing at all. It is keeping your own CFP money if you earn it. The schools that are not contributing anything and are going to be left in the cold if the ACC splits need to cough up some of their share.

this thing is FAR from being resolved. This is just a temporary solution, and a little more money while while everyone while everyone contemplates and assesses next steps isn't a bad thing.

Keep in mind, it's a process that involves A LOT of moving parts, so it's not going to get fully resolved quickly.

The consequences and implications are enormous, so Clemson (and its allies) have to be very calculating, analytical, deliberate, and methodical.

What is the dollar figure buyout to set us free? I could chip into a fund to be free of the ACC. Anyone know?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well...as I understand it...

May 17, 2023, 1:22 PM

in the event a program exits the ACC, a buyout fee (which is upwards of $120 million) will need to be met. Then, the grant of rights will take away all TV deal revenue during the duration of the deal which runs through 2036 or 14 years. The ACC currently pays each member about $43 million annually, so $43 million x 14 years equals another $602 million.

This is why schools are looking to exit as a group of at least 8 which would effectively bring about the end of the ACC and the GOR.

We've seen the numbers quoted ad nauseam. Those numbers are only valid if the GOR is valid. No one has ever challenged these conference GOR contracts in a court of law. Lawyers are paid big $ to breach contracts, all contracts have weaknesses.

I gotta believe...

May 17, 2023, 2:46 PM

the GOR must be a pretty tough nut to crack. Otherwise, some teams would likely have departed before now (maybe even Clemson).

It is all corporate speak. No one is satisfied with the result and are moving forward the same as before with alternative solutions. Bottom line Clemson and FSU will be in the SEC in time for the 2025 season. You don't make that much noise about pay outs and settle for a $5 Starbucks card. Anyone that believes this is done still believes that the ACC, PAC 12, Big 10, Big 12 Alliance is viable. That was garbage from the beginning just like this new "solution" is.

and the others have a strong point. It likely isn't over. But it still feels like someone deflated my balloon.
