I’m not a coach. I’m in PR.

Like 99% of the people on here, I am not a football coach. I won’t pretend to know how coaches evaluate talent. I won’t tell you I know the perfect play to call in any situation. What I will tell you is that I know branding. And Clemson Football has a developing brand problem on its hands. Here’s why:

1. We don’t have THAT guy. Think about it. Who’s our star on the national stage? Who’s the guy that others want to come here to play with? We don’t have him right now. We’ve had them in the past - Trevor, Christian Wilkins, ETN, Nuk, Mike Williams, etc. Don’t get me wrong. We have some very nice players. But we don’t have that guy right now.

2. Our offensive scheme doesn’t stand out. We aren’t doing anything different. On top of that, we are struggling to execute the scheme we do have. If Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors, we have only one - vanilla.

3. The perception, right or wrong, of our position on the transfer portal and NIL is hurting us. We look stuck in the past and at times, we sound as if we are pining for days gone by - when it was about being a scholar athlete. No matter how much we wish it was still that way, it isn’t and it won’t be. But by being a slow mover on those two trends we appear out of touch. Not a very appealing offering for today’s players.

4. We lack recognizable player leadership. This is similar to the first point I made but to be clear it’s more about the intangible than pure skill. Ben Boulware was a good linebacker but he was a great leader. Who’s that leader now?

5. The struggles of our departed coaches actually hurts us. Jeff Scott is on the hot seat. There are no indications that Tony E will turn things around at UVa (admittedly, it’s still early) and Coach Brent is underperforming expectations at Oklahoma. Of course, we can’t forget Chad who recently quit his high school job in Allen, Texas. Not much of a coaching tree when compared to Hal Mumme, Nick Saban or Bob Stoops.

The good news is that these issues are addressable. And we have faced them before. It’s far from time to push the panic button but it is time for us to step up and take control of our identity.
