And amazingly it is interpreted a million different ways by a million different believers in Islam. Just the same as any holy book. The Bible could certainly be read/interpreted to endorse slavery and outright says women shouldn't spoeak in church and that gay folks should be killed. But, society progresses, and holy books are read thriugh the lens of progress (much to the chagrin of extremists or fundamentalists).

Calling for the slaughter of infidels and the murder of Jews. Calling for the physical abuse of women. Muhammad married a 6 year old and got her pregnant at the ripe age of 9.
Did Jesus impregnate 9 year olds.

Sharia law isn't coming here. The dude who got elected in NYC isn't going to start beheading women. Calm the F down. II don’t have time to reply to all of your nonsense. Muhammad, the prophet that all Muslims follow as the direct messenger of Allah married a 6 year old and impregnated a 9 year old. The Quran calls for the slaughter of Jews and infidels.

Christians follow the New Testament and Jesus’ teachings. Please show me one verse where Jesus called for murder of his enemies or to strike your wife.

I know you think it’s only 1 Muslim mayor. Look at England. 8 of their counties are now majority Muslim. Native Brits are protesting by the thousands. https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/E-8-2015-003081_EN.html
Here’s an article about the wave of Muslim rape in Europe.

Of course that mayor won’t condone what is written in the Quran, publicly. He would never be elected. Why would anyone follow the teachings of a child rapist calling for the slaughter of his enemies?

And if you think Islam is the only religion with ugly verses, maybe actually read the Bible. It literally calls for killing adulterers and enslaving people. But rational Christians know not to take that literally, same goes for Muslims.

Western civilization wasn’t “built on Christianity.” It was built when people escaped church control and embraced secular government. You’d know that if you understood the Constitution you pretend to love.

So no, a Muslim mayor in New York isn’t the end of America. The real threat is people who can’t tell the difference between faith and fearmongering.

“new covenant” and that Christianity as a religion is built primarily around the teachings of Jesus, not the old legal codes of ancient Israel. The reason I brought up Old Testament laws is because they still exist within the Christian canon and are often cited selectively. Many conservative Christians still reference Old Testament passages when condemning things like homosexuality or “immorality,” yet conveniently ignore the ones about slavery, stoning, or dietary laws.

So you’re right in that the message of Christianity is rooted in grace, forgiveness, and equality before God. The point was simply that it’s unfair to treat Islam as uniquely harsh or outdated when Christianity’s own texts contain similar material that most modern believers interpret contextually. The comparison isn’t about faith itself, but about consistency in how we judge others’ religions.

I don't know that Christian views on women should be determined based on the writings of the Old Testament. So I disregard the first 2/3rds of that list...

Soooo...

"They were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive"
Luke 1:7, Bible (NIV)

Right off the bat, I'm concerned here. This is not the "The Bible hates women" passage you should be starting with (NT). This is the argument of your significant other trying to win an argument.

"When the [40] days of her [Mary's] purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him [Jesus] to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord)"

Luke 2:22-23, Bible (KJV)

Sigh. What...what are we doing here?

"The head of the woman is man... He is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman, but woman for man... A woman ought to have authority over her own head"

...I mean...

"Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak... If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church."

1 Corinthians 14:34-35, Bible (NIV)

Okay, this is the first one that is interesting within the context of the debate. In researching this, I found that there's even some debate as to whether or not it was written by Paul...some think it was a note added by a later scribe.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Epistle_to_the_Corinthians

No idea...just found it interesting. But sure, I guess. The Bible hates women. This is found in a letter on how to deal with people talking in tongues at church, bee tee dubs.

"Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church... As the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything."
Ephesians 5:22-24, Bible (NIV); similar: Colossians 3:18
"This is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord."

1 Peter 3:5-6, Bible (NIV)

Yeah, I think there's a lot of versus where the woman should recognize the husband as the leader of the family. If you think that structure means that Christianity teaches misogyny, I would have to concede.

"As for younger widows... when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies who talk nonsense, saying things they ought not to... Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan."

1 Timothy 5:11-15, Bible (NIV)

Wh...what?

"Ordain elders in every city... If any be blameless, the husband of one wife..."

If you'll excuse me, I'm going to order my wife to bring me some aspirin.

"Wives... submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives"

1 Peter 3:1, Bible (NIV)

"Teach the young women to be... obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."

Titus 2:4-5, Bible (KJV)"

Yep. I think there's a lot of biblical references to the man being in charge.

"I looked, and there before me was the Lamb [Jesus]... and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads... And they sang a new song... No one could learn the song except the 144,000... These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins."

Revelation 14:1-4, Bible (NIV)

I don't know what in the world this person is doing who put this list together. It reads like "Hey...if I just keep posting quotes and then telling you how it means the Bible thinks women suck, eventually you'll just believe me." As I said, I'm no Biblical scholar and really not a very good Christian, but in good faith I took a look at this list. I would say (and would be happy to be corrected) that the Christian Bible is not an inherently misogynist book given that it was written by men 2,000 years ago, beyond what I see as a consistent call for wives to obey their husbands.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're misunderstanding what those verses represent.

2

Nov 5, 2025, 2:37 PM
Reply

The Vice-Verses list isn’t claiming “the Bible hates women.” It’s documenting how scripture has been used historically to justify subordination, exclusion, and inequality. You don’t erase that by saying “context.” Context is the issue: those passages reflect patriarchal societies where women were treated as property, barred from leadership, and expected to submit to men.

Paul’s letters in particular shaped Western gender norms for centuries. When he says “women should remain silent in church” or “wives, submit to your husbands,” those aren’t just local advisories. They became doctrine that silenced women in pulpits and politics for 2,000 years. You can’t pretend that didn’t happen.

And the “New Covenant” argument doesn’t magically erase misogyny. The New Testament was written entirely by men, in cultures where women had few rights. Jesus himself was radically inclusive toward women, but the institutional church that followed him wasn’t. That’s why these verses matter: they reveal the contradictions between his example and how the church codified control.

So yes, Islam has problems with women’s rights in some modern states, but Christianity’s record isn’t spotless either. Using the Bible to claim the West has moral superiority on gender is historically blind.

It also misses my overall point that I'm trying to make with Major and his blanket bigotry.

As long as Christians continue to cite the Old Testament for legislation, like oppressing LGBT folks, as long as they continue to try to force the 10 Commandments in public places, and as long as they keep claiming clearly fictional stories as fact, none of it can be dismissed in these discussions.

I know some of this link is a stretch but most is not, and even the New Testament passages have been used to make women second class in the eyes of the church. I didn't write the Timothy passage; it's there.

Here's my overall point, though: Major thinks a Muslim shouldn't hold office because of his holy book's view of women. If that's the standard, neither should Christians.

Just as I don't ascribe to any individual adherent of Islam all of the interpreted views of the Qoran.

I honestly had not heard of this.

What is this "purity culture" and where is it taking root? Anywhere I can read more about it?

Trump voters voted for a literal Antichrist and will all burn in hell. Muslims expect Jesus to return and defeat the Antichrist.

Even if this were remotely true, and I am assuming "they" refers to the city council, how is it any different from a city council in Bofugg, Kansas, reading the Bible before a legislative session? In case you were not aware, Jesus is not mentioned in our constitution, nor is Mohammad. We are a nation that celebrates religious freedom. In short, your imaginary sky daddy is no better than any other. And in closing, many of our founding fathers were atheists, as are a lot of highly intelligent people who rely on facts over faith, and tend to question authority.

The Quran has some terrible things but not as bad as the Bible…

“You shall acknowledge no God but me. . . . You are destroyed, Israel. . . . The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open.”

“See, the day of the Lord is coming — a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger. . . . I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty. . . . Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives violated.”

“And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: ‘If you give the Ammonites into my hands, whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.’ . . . When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of timbrels! . . . After the two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed.”

“O daughter Babylon, you devastator! Happy shall they be who pay you back what you have done to us! Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock!”

Look what an angry little rage monkey you are in this thread. But that's because you're actually a very frightened little guy for a few reasons. First, you can't stand the idea of anyone different than you being elected democratically (something you want to get rid of), even though this NYC has absolutely no effect on your life and because others have told you that you're supposed to care.

Second, you know last night that in every election, voters came out in force to send a very clear #### you to Trump. You know good #### well what's on the horizon. This party is coming to an end, and the same way they do when police bust them.

Pound your little fists, white nationalist.

What are you worried is going to happen? NY will be under Sharia Law? Women will be covered head to toe? You must have the idea that a mayor is the same thing as an authoritarian dictator--gosh, wonder how that got in your head?

And, as everybody else has pointed out...if you think the Quran is bad, try reading the Bible. I'd bet my house you haven't read either one, and I'm serious about that.

I'm sure in 2002 if you told anyone in NYC they would elect a Muslim as mayor

in the next quarter century - they would have thought you were crazy.

BUT - this guy is not an extremist. He has some ideas that I don't necessarily agree with - but since the people in NYC have spoken...let's see what he can do.

If dude sets up a Sharia court in Gracie Mansion then gets Congress

to recognize it as an official judicial authority, then I'll worry. Much like I'd worry if the Jews got Congress to establish Beth Din courts as an official judicial authority, or the Catholics with their ecclesiastical tribunals, or the Amish with their councils.

Until then, it's just another day in the Big Apple. If they want a socialist calling the shots on policy up there, okay then. Good luck with that.

Although he's going to run away from this thread after getting torched, but...

How does he feel about having an evangelical Christian in office pushing their religion? I mean, Trump isn't a Christian but he lies and pretends to be. My guess is Major has no problem with that hypocrisy.
