I concur with eagle rare and four roses. Actually had eagle rare for the first time on my wedding day 5 years ago, so it's got fond memories attached to it. I'm usually a scotch drinker, but those bourbons are quite tasty.

Up until about 10-12 years ago, bourbon had to be from the state of Kentucky. They have relaxed the standards. Bourbon can be distilled in Kentucky then trucked to another state and bottled, like Virginia Gentleman was years ago.

This is spot on, and definitely my favorite line. Best quality for the price.
Eagle Rare has been my go to since Trace and Blanton's have become difficult to find.
Angel's Envy, Basil Hayden, Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, and Woodford Reserve are in the liquor cabinet at all times, along with Jim Beam for people who prefer mixed drinks. There are a lot of good bourbons out there, but these are my favorites.

Yeah, they are hands down the best right now. They also do W.L. Weller, Stagg Jr, and Col. Taylor. Their antique collection, if you can get your hands on any of them, is worth the cash.
They have a very fun, and free, tour at their distillery. It's not on the "trail" but it's worth the diversion. Probably one of the more memorable ones we had.

I made the transition from scotch to bourbon a few years back. Elijah Craig is about as good as it gets for a readily available "baseline" bourbon. Russell's Reserve single barrel (red/white label) is also terrific with more complexity, higher proof and price. Weller's Antique is great for $27 when I can find it but Buffalo Trace nut-riders usually scoop it up quickly. Larceny is a wheater by Heaven Hill and obscene at only $35 a bottle. Yes I've tried all the high-end vintages of Pappy, Hirsch, etc but you're talking about stuff that you can actually go down to the store and expect to find, right?

I'm not exactly sure, I think my palate was just changing a little bit. I noticed I was trending more towards the "bourbon-y" scotches and then realized that I just typically preferred bourbon overall. I'll still sip a scotch on occasion though too.

Buffalo Trace is a great, full bodied bourbon that is relatively easy on the wallet (about 27 bucks/for a 750ml bottle). I usually keep a bottle of that around all the time.

I received a bottle of Tin Cup for Christmas from my Bro-in-law. A double and it made me act like K Costner....(no, didn't break clubs or chase Renee Russo...)
Just finished it tonight 48 days after getting it. Fortunately, about a half=pint was consumed in Clemson before Dec. 27.
Makers, Buffalo Trace, Woodford, are good choices. Try some mini bottles to see "What ya' got a taste for???" before building some inventory.
Be responsibile.

So many choices and grades.....best of that mid-tier standard bourbon (makers, beam, woodford, etc) is Four Roses and Buffalo Trace.
If you have time to do the KY Bourbon tour, be sure to check out Woodford and Buffalo Trace (they have an extended tour that takes 3 hours but is well worth it!). Makers is good too ( scenic and out in the country) but more commercial than the others. Since we play Louisville on a Saturday this year, it'd be worth it to drive up on a Thursday night and do a few tours on Friday.

Obviously, Pappy is good. But, it's a complete novelty rip-off. Save your money.
We had a blind taste test with ten different bourbons/whiskey for an open bar at a wedding (me, the groomsmen, and the groom). Basil Hayden was the unanomous number one. It's just so smooth! I forget the order of the rest, but it was really fun! Woodford and Bookers was up there.
Some other go-to are: Woodford, Knob Creek, Angel's Envy, Four Roses, Jack Single Barrel, Booker's, Blanton's

Buffalo Trace stays in my decanter. You will not get a better bourbon for the price.
Eagle Rare is from Buffalo Trace distillery and is absolutely amazing. Bookers is smooth for being over 100 proof. Four Roses small batch is really good. Bakers is solid. A couple low dollar gems to consider are Evan Williams 1783 small batch and 1792.
If you stumble upon Maple Hill, buy it an savor if you can. It used to be about $25 a bottle and there is quite a bit of mystery around it. It is quickly trending towards Pappy status.
And lastly, I live in Cali so it may be a little easier for me to get a hold of, but Breaker bourbon is incredibly tasty too.

Makers was my go-to on rare occasions when I drank Bourbon, and my Louisville sales rep is married to the master distiller for MM. But the reason I switched from Scotch is because a friend convinced my to try Woodford Reserve. I drink it on ice, sometimes in an old fashioned. I enjoy it so much that I haven't been curious enough to try all the others. Smooth as silk.

For the price ($46) Noah's Mill is hard to beat. Angel's Envy, Blanton's, and Booker's are great as well.
I recently ordered some Blanton's Gold, which can only be purchased in international Markets for some reason. It is a higher proof and It was great. Also try Widow Jane 10 year (one of my favorites).

Vintage bourbon (extremely rare, like white elephants), basil Hayden's, most underrated is blade & bow (made from stitzell seller family that obviously created seller, pappy, and others), welled, and willet (not only for the cool bottle but because it is pot stilled it has as close a finish to pappy for same distilling process.

Russels Reserve Single Barrel and Rare Breed 112.8 proof. Im a WT guy and love the maple vanilla oak taste that WT bourbons have a ton of. WT 101 is my go to but those two previously mentioned are the special occasions faves.

I love Bourbon. Spent a week a couple of years ago doing all 3 of the trails. There's been a lot of affordable entry level bourbons already mentioned, but for me, I gravitate towards single barrel and/or high proof stuff. But here is my list of favorites:
1 W.L. Weller Special Reserve. It's relatively cheap and the taste is outstanding. It's a wheated bourbon so it's going to have a more sweet tone to it. Hard to find in SC and even in parts of KY. Usually can find it in TN
2. Old Scout Smooth Ambler, 7 year or the Single Barrel. I didn't care for the 10 year. The Single Barrel is currently my favorite Single Barrel out there, and the 7 year sits closely behind it.
3. John J Bowman Single Barrel. I think it's produced in WV, but a very nice Single Barrel.
4. Stagg Jr. Very high proof, but with a little ice or water it's super.
5. Elmer T Lee.
6. Eagle Rare.
7. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof.
8. Willett Pot Still. I use the bottles for decor. This used to be my favorite, then I went away from it. When I come back to it, it just doesn't taste the same to me anymore. Still a decent bourbon.
9. Jeffersons (any variety really).
10. Bookers.
And of course, Pappy, but it's like unobtainium.
Some really good every day stuff: Buffalo Trace Larceny Angels Envy Knob Creek Single Barrel Makers 46 Four Roses Single Barrel Basil Hayden
I'm really looking forward to Wilderness Trail's release next year. Their first batch(es) only go to those who sign up. I was really impressed by their operations and the science they are using to create their bourbon. Really cool guys as well.

Woodford is my choice

Speaking of Buffalo Trace, my friend just bought a 9yr barrel and had it bottled as a fund raiser. It is not bad.
Oh, I've never tried it, but I have had two other friends swear that bourbon and Tang make a great drink. I know, right? If you try it, don't use a top shelf bourbon.

I think everyone has a preference here whether they like it strong, smooth, or sweet. You'll pay for the smooth, as well as the sweet. I like Makers 46, Four Roses Single Barrel, and Eagle Rare, neat and in a good glass. But I love trying new stuff, and my ADD helps me forget what I've tried before so the adventure never ends.

Old Forester Birthday Bourbon = 10/10

Long time lurker, and of course it would be bourbon that gets me to post for the first time! I went to the Louisville game last year with my brother and we sat down at the bar at Doc Crows around 11:50am. We were the only ones at the bar. The bartender asks us what we want and I asked for some bourbon that I wouldn't likely see outside Kentucky. She asked us our price range. We said we didn't have one. Without hesitation she went straight for one particular bottle and poured us a glass, telling us the story of how Old Forester releases its limited run Birthday Bourbon every year in September to celebrate the founder's birthday, and how she went personally to the distillery to stand in line to get this bottle for the bar. It is without a doubt my favorite bourbon in the world. I've had the Pappys and the Wellers and the others, but this one for me stands above. That being said, if you aren't looking to spend a ton of money on a bottle, you can't do much better than Blantons! And if you happen to live in the northeast or the Atlanta area, look for Widow Jane. That's been my go-to drink over the last year or so.

Agreed. Birthday is fantastic but hard to find and expensive. Have both you mentioned on my counter currently.

I'd say a good general rule of thumb is to figure out some bourbons that you like, then see what their mash bill is, and then you can look for others with a similar bill. I know that I like rye-heavy bourbons (15-20%ish rye), so the Widow Jane and Blantons make sense. Old Forester is 18% rye. Anything from that comes from the Buffalo Trace mash bill #2 I know I'm going to enjoy bc its 15% rye.

I live in Tampa too, if you haven't taken a trip up the bourbon trail (i-65), I would highly recommend it. You'll love it.

Not a fan of bourbon unless mixed. Then any will do. Scotch is a completely different game, single malt, neat or on the rocks. Peatier the better...Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Caol Ila. It's a love or hate thing. I'm head over heels.

I've only seen this mentioned one other time in this long thread, but Larceny is a bourbon that is very easy on the wallet that is solid. I know you can find it a few places in Greenville and Simpsonville.

Rare is fairly easy to find in Charlotte area and surrounding South Carolina towns. About once a month huge batches come in. Now you can even buy handles of it. Didn't even know that existed until recently

If you're making cough medicine...

Evan Williams has been the best choice. And yes, I'm serious. Mix it with honey and lemon juice and it's magic!
It's not bad for a low-end bourbon, but for some reason, it seems to cut the coughing better.

I'm a fan of the four Small Batch Bourbon's put out by Beam: Bookers Bakers Knob Creek Basil Hayden
If you are a novice, Basil Hayden will be a good one to try. Not only is it less expensive, it's only 80 proof. If you want to get some hair on your chest... fill a glass with a couple ice cubes and put a double shot of Bookers in your glass. I Love bourbon and I always add distilled water to Bookers. It is really strong (barrel strength)
One that is not usually available around here is Pogue. It is very smooth and in the $35 range for 750ml. If you can find it, try it. Good stuff.
