tournament game. He was incorrect.
Clemson has 11 tournament appearances in history. Brownell has one of them.
Clemson has 9 tournament wins, ever. Brownell has one of them.
This is not a pro or anti Brownell post. Just setting the record straight.

He won a play-in game (which shouldn't count as an NCAA win)

and he did it with Purnell's players.

And Purnell never won a NCAA tournament game with his own players!

It's not about the yay factor, at all.

It's simply about the fact it unquestionably counts as NCAA win. That's the only premise.

shouldn't really count. I don't see how needing to win a game to get into the actual 64-team field is better than getting in outright. We lost in the 1st round - the same as the Purnell years. They can call it the "Round of 64" or whatever it is now, but it's still the 1st round to me.

His one win was in the First Four, which shouldn't count.

Once we got to the REAL first round of the tournament, we lost...not a huge success.

Agreed. He did it when Purnell didn't.

Speaking of didn't, Purnell didn't recruit anyone behind those players either. He recruited some good players, never won a truly meaningful game, didn't recruit any more players, then poof, he was gone.

job than Purnell, then you have lost your mind. It's a ridiculous argument. Purnell took us to three straight tourneys. And yes...we lost in the first round each time. But wouldn't it be nice to have the opportunity to lose a first round game again someday?

Purnell left an NCAA Tournament roster and Brownell

pissed it away. Imagine if Brownell had followed Larry Shyatt, he never would have sniffed the NCAA tournament.
You don't seem to realize that it is Brownell's responsibility to recruit players for his team. Once Coach Purnell left, the recruiting was in the hands of your hero, Brad Brownell.
But, like our tournament hopes under Brownell - poof the recruits were gone.

But it's not splitting hairs either. It is recorded as an NCAA tournament win.
Do you think people who won games after the field was expanded to 64 should exclude their wins?
